The Colorado River flows west out of the Rockies cutting through a raised plateau called the Kaibab Upwarp—but how does a river flow directly through a massive mountain ridge rather than routing around it?

There are vast missing layers of Grand Canyon sediment known as the Great Unconformity. In certain parts of the canyon, a massive gap in the rock record exists where 250 million to 1.2 billion years of Earth’s history have completely vanished.
