I noticed this article pointer while reading about the IBEX report on the 'ribbon' out at the heliopause in Science Today. One of the best illustrations I've seen of twisting currents in dark mode. That is to say, as they explain, these are not even visible in optical wavelengths, but are see in infrared (IR). Everything emits. It's just that when it is cold (relative to 98.6°F) it glows at long wavelengths - infrared to radio, say - and this appears to have picked up a pair of plasma currents, Birkeland currents, with a relatively cool content of electrons ions and neutral components. A twisted pair at large scale.

Definitely the feeder for our galaxy!
I had used that article for what I considered a victorious argument on some comment section or other against black holes... wish I could remember which one that was :\
I swear I'm getting old.

Certainly, though slightly "old news."jjohnson wrote:A twisted pair at large scale.
In any event, they pretty clearly seem to fit the general template of entwined ropes of plasma (most likely field-aligned currents / Birkeland currents).
