False Prophets, Big Profits

Summary:

Though the fear of world-threatening disaster is deeply embedded in human consciousness, often the best insights into this anxiety come from a study of Earth's catastrophic past.

But many people find an expected future more interesting than the past. Perhaps this is why, throughout history, countless self-proclaimed prophets and seers have attracted so much attention. As many listeners of late-night radio can attest, even after all the failed prophecies of years passed, the End of the World is as popular as ever.

We can be confident that the Electric Universe, in its extension to the "electricity of life," will help to validate many levels of psychic phenomena. But one of the greatest obstacles will be the role of charlatans. In recent years their popular but discredited "prophecies" have provided debunkers of psychic powers with all of the straw men they could have asked for.
