Reverse Speech - The Mirror in the Door, Pt. 1
by Michael Goodspeed

Summary:

In 1983, Australian researcher David John Oates made a seemingly unbelievable discovery: when human speech is played backwards, intelligent phrases can apparently be heard as often as every ten to fifteen seconds. Decades earlier, some religious personalities had made a similar, and highly questionable "discovery," of alleged "satanic" messages embedded in rock 'n roll music. Unsurprisingly, many self-styled "skeptics" reacted against Oates' claims, labeling it "pseudoscience," and asserting that listeners can only decipher purported speech reversals when prompted by pre-suggestion.

On a personal note, I took an interest in Reverse Speech after hearing David Oates on a national radio program over a decade ago. In fact, as serendipity would have it, my path and David's would cross shortly thereafter. I began exploring Reverse Speech with the same reservations as any naturally skeptical thinker. At first glance, the idea of the brain producing intelligent statements in both forward and "backward" speech seems implausible, if not impossible. But in reality, the notion may not be nearly as far-fetched as one might believe. In fact, according to a study reported in the journal Nature in 1999, human beings are able to decipher speech that is played backwards with almost as much ease as natural forward speech.

In this presentation, Oates and I agreed it would be most effective if we only offered examples of Reverse Speech without "tainting" the listeners with pre-suggestion. You'll notice that in introducing the interview, I state that both David and I "know" that Reverse Speech is real. I urge the listener to not be offended by this statement. This is a conclusion I came to only after years of intensive, first-hand study, and in David's case, it has been nothing less than his vocation and life's purpose for a quarter-century. Now I would never expect the naturally skeptical (in this context I use the word skeptic in its TRUE sense, meaning one who investigates every possibility before forming a conclusion) to be persuaded by a ten-minute video, no matter how compelling. But if you're willing to listen with an open-mind, I can virtually promise that your natural human curiosity will be piqued, and you might just be willing to explore a bit further.
