People often think of our solar system as just a few planets and a bunch of empty space.

Are you kidding me? Well, let's let the Authors bio speak for itself.

scientists have known that our solar system sits within a peculiar region of space called the Local Hot Bubble.
This area, estimated to be about 300 light years across, formed as a result of powerful stellar explosions called supernovas.
They heated the surrounding gas, producing a low-density, high-temperature environment. Traces of these distant events still linger as wispy distributions of hot plasma.
“We find the temperature of the LHB exhibits a north-south dichotomy at high latitudes,” stated Dr. L. L. Sala, lead author of the study.

At least "they" are causing more people to become aware of such things and some people are more intuitive than average and grasp the micro to macro scalar nature of physical phenomena, so are not so pedantic they need every detail explained to understand and will gain insight by intuitive deduction.

There are people we know nothing about visiting this forum who understand the EU and talk to their friends about it, so knowledge of EU is more widespread than is immediately obvious to some here who choose to identify themselves as valiant torchbearers facing an uphill struggle.
