ACADEMIA.EDU often has some fairly interesting papers. Ones relating to Ancient Rock Art are my main interest there. I receive a paper from them by email almost daily. I used AI (that's my writing staff) to summarize these 3 recent papers. Of course, we can't rely on AI's accuracy, but I skimmed through the first two before getting these AI summaries and those 2 seem reasonably accurate. I posted a bunch of titles on my Catastrophism thread a few weeks or months ago. Maybe I'll put summaries of them here too. Here's where I posted the titles: viewtopic.php?t=13&start=960#p11571 and viewtopic.php?t=13&start=960#p11579.

Petroglyphs, Lighting, and Magnetism (2007)
https://www.academia.edu/129487883
{If lightning was much more frequent and powerful in ancient times, and if boulders were magnetized by lightning strikes, then what?}
_The paper "Petroglyphs, Lighting, and Magnetism" explores the possible relationships between ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings), natural lighting phenomena, and magnetic anomalies. It investigates whether certain petroglyph sites were deliberately chosen or influenced by their proximity to locations with unusual magnetic properties or where natural light effects—such as sunlight, shadows, or even lightning—could interact with the rock surfaces.
_Key points include:
_Magnetic Anomalies at Petroglyph Sites: The study examines evidence that some petroglyph locations coincide with areas of local magnetic anomalies, suggesting ancient peoples might have been sensitive to or intentionally selected these spots, possibly due to perceived energetic or spiritual qualities.
_Lighting Effects: The paper discusses how natural lighting—both sunlight and lightning—could enhance the visibility or perceived power of petroglyphs, especially at specific times of day or year. This could have ritual or symbolic significance.
_Geophysical Methods: Modern geophysical prospection techniques, such as magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar, are used to detect subsurface features and magnetic variations at petroglyph sites. These methods help researchers understand the environmental context and possible reasons for site selection.
_Cultural and Symbolic Implications: The interplay between natural forces (magnetism, light) and human artistic expression is considered, with the hypothesis that ancient artists may have encoded knowledge of these phenomena into their rock art, or that the sites themselves were chosen for their unusual physical properties.
_Overall, the paper suggests a multidisciplinary approach, combining archaeology, geophysics, and cultural studies, to better understand why certain petroglyph sites were chosen and how natural phenomena may have influenced ancient rock art.

Research on hunter–gatherer societies and their astronomical knowledge (2024)
https://www.academia.edu/113063983
_{Search: pol:21, planet:51, Moon:6, Mercury:9, Venus:17, Mars:18, Jupiter:13, Saturn:6, Pleiades:12, constellation:54, master:66 -- I recently wrote a post about the Evolution of Religion which involved the Master of Animals, which was associated with the ancient polar column & the squatterman, aka tree of life. So this paper gives minor hints of that.}
_This examines how hunter-gatherer groups worldwide have developed and used astronomical knowledge. It begins by exploring why stars and constellations were named and connects this to broader cultural concepts, such as the "Master/Mistress of Animals," to illustrate how celestial phenomena influenced earthly life and societal organization. The study documents various examples of how stars, constellations, and planets were identified and interpreted by different societies.
_The paper also attempts to contextualize ancient cave and rock paintings within an astronomical framework, suggesting that some prehistoric art may encode celestial knowledge. It discusses how the precessional movement of the Earth's axis could help date these traditions and artworks. The research emphasizes the importance of archaeology in archaeoastronomy—the study of ancient astronomical practices, beliefs, and their cultural significance—and presents case studies showing the impact of sky lore on prehistoric societies.
_Overall, the paper highlights the deep integration of astronomy into the myths, rituals, and daily lives of hunter-gatherers, and it advocates for a multidisciplinary approach combining archaeology, ethnology, and astronomy to better understand these ancient worldviews.

Book Review: Archaeoastronomy: Introduction to the Science of Stars and Stones (2016)
https://www.academia.edu/45240569
_Giulio Magli’s book is a comprehensive introduction to archaeoastronomy, aimed primarily at undergraduate students and newcomers to the field. The text is organized into three main sections:
_Methods: This section covers the fundamental techniques used in archaeoastronomy, including basic astronomical concepts and how they are applied to the study of ancient monuments and sites. It provides readers with the tools to analyze alignments, orientations, and the astronomical significance of archaeological remains.
_Ideas: Magli explores the cultural and intellectual impacts of astronomical knowledge on ancient societies. He discusses how celestial phenomena influenced mythology, religion, social organization, and the development of calendars, although the treatment of calendars is noted as relatively brief given their importance.
_Places: The final section presents case studies of notable archaeoastronomical sites from around the world. These examples illustrate how ancient peoples incorporated astronomical observations into their architecture and landscapes, and how such practices varied across cultures and epochs.
_Strengths and Limitations: The book is praised for its accessible structure and clear framework for teaching the subject. It is richly illustrated and provides a global perspective on the discipline. However, it lacks a strong mathematical foundation, which could be a limitation for students with varying academic backgrounds, and the discussion of calendars is less comprehensive than some might expect given their central role in archaeoastronomy.
_Overall: "Archaeoastronomy: Introduction to the Science of Stars and Stones" serves as an effective entry point for understanding how ancient societies observed, interpreted, and integrated the sky into their cultural practices, using a blend of scientific and humanistic approaches.

{I decided to add this summary of a title on my Catastrophism thread.}
Advanced Plasma Computations and Experiments
https://lanl.academia.edu/Departments/A ... /Documents
_The collection of documents from the Advanced Plasma Computations and Experiments group at Los Alamos National Laboratory covers a range of topics in plasma physics and astrophysics. Key themes include:
_Neutral Hydrogen Emission in the Interstellar Medium:
Several studies analyze emission profiles of neutral hydrogen (HI) in space, identifying distinct linewidth regimes and confirming the existence of multiple components in galactic hydrogen emissions. These findings are important for understanding the structure and dynamics of the interstellar medium.
_Advancements in Plasma Simulation:
The group highlights progress in simulating astrophysical and cosmic plasmas, leveraging advanced computational techniques such as multilevel concurrent simulation and high-performance computing. These simulations are critical for modeling complex plasma behaviors observed in space.
_Plasma Morphology and Cosmic Structure:
The documents reference early predictions that the universe has a filamentary structure due to the dominance of plasma, which makes up the vast majority of visible matter in the universe. This filamentary morphology is a foundational concept in plasma cosmology.
_Plasma Phenomena in Space and Archaeology:
The collection includes discussions on how space is filled with energetic particles and plasmas, which can produce a variety of observable phenomena. Notably, one paper connects high-current plasma discharges (Z-pinches) to patterns found on Neolithic or Early Bronze Age artifacts, suggesting a link between plasma events and ancient rock art—a topic relevant to plasma archaeology.
_Astrophysical Applications:
Other topics include the study of pulsars, plasma-arc discharges in volcanic plumes on Io (a moon of Jupiter), and the broader implications of plasma processes in both natural and engineered environments.
_Historical Contributions:
The collection also features highlights from the career of Oscar Buneman, a pioneer in computational plasma physics, underscoring the foundational role of computation in advancing the field.
_Overall, these documents illustrate the central role of plasma processes in both cosmic and terrestrial contexts and highlight the use of advanced computation to explore phenomena ranging from interstellar hydrogen clouds to the possible plasma origins of ancient human symbols.

Unheard Voices, Part 1: The Astronomy of Many Cultures -- A Resource Guide (2015)
https://www.academia.edu/49138085
_The resource guide "Unheard Voices Part 1: The Astronomy of Many Cultures" primarily serves as an annotated bibliography and overview of literature and resources on ancient and cultural astronomy, highlighting how diverse societies integrated celestial observations into myths, monuments, calendars, and rituals. While much of the guide synthesizes existing knowledge, several points are notably relevant to catastrophism:
_Mythological Astronomy and Catastrophic Events: The guide references works like Sampson Arnold Mackey's "The Mythological Astronomy," which argues that ancient myths and religious practices encode astronomical knowledge, including references to dramatic celestial events—such as eclipses, planetary conjunctions, and possibly cometary or meteoritic impacts—that could be interpreted as catastrophic phenomena influencing human history and belief systems. Mackey's emphasis on the "Great Year" (precessional cycles) and the role of celestial omens in shaping historical events aligns with catastrophist interpretations that see myth as a record of past cosmic disasters.
_Celestial Phenomena as Omens and Divine Interventions: The guide notes that many cultures interpreted eclipses, planetary alignments, and other unusual sky events as omens or signs of divine intervention, often linked to upheaval or disaster. This supports a catastrophist reading of ancient texts and traditions, suggesting that societies may have witnessed and mythologized real catastrophic events.
_Archaeoastronomy and the Dating of Catastrophic Events: The guide mentions the use of archaeoastronomical methods to date ancient monuments and artworks by correlating them with astronomical events, including those that may have had catastrophic impacts on societies (e.g., the effects of precession on star lore, or the alignment of monuments with significant celestial events). This approach can provide new evidence for the timing and cultural memory of ancient catastrophes.
_Lost Knowledge and Catastrophic Memory: There is a recurring theme in the guide (especially in the description of Mackey's work) about the "lost knowledge of antiquity" and the idea that much of humanity's understanding of the cosmos—and by extension, its catastrophic history—has been forgotten or encoded in myth. This resonates with catastrophist theories that propose ancient societies preserved the memory of world-altering events in their myths and monuments.

Antiquity of Iran's rock art: pre-History or Historic-Islamic time (2020)
https://www.academia.edu/42754665
The article "Antiquity of Iran’s Rock Art: Pre-History or Historic Islamic Time" does not directly discuss catastrophic events or catastrophism, but there are aspects of potential interest to catastrophists. The rock art surveyed spans from the prehistoric era to the Islamic period and includes motifs and symbols whose meanings are not fully understood. Some petroglyphs depict extinct or unrecognizable animals, and abstract motifs whose interpretations remain speculative. For catastrophists, such imagery could be seen as potential evidence of lost knowledge or memories of dramatic natural events, such as extinctions or environmental upheavals, preserved in ancient art. Additionally, the continuity of certain motifs from prehistory into later cultural artifacts suggests long-term cultural memory, which some catastrophist theories interpret as encoding ancient disasters or cosmic events.

Ashes of Atlantis - part 1 (2021)
https://www.academia.edu/63468751
The text examines the Atlantis legend through geological, archaeological, and mythological lenses, focusing on catastrophic events as the drivers of cultural memory and landscape change. It critiques the Richat Structure hypothesis for Atlantis, instead arguing that the destruction described by Plato aligns with the eruption of Thera (Santorini) and the resulting megatsunami that devastated Minoan Crete and the wider Mediterranean around 1224 BC. The paper ties this disaster to both archaeological evidence and ancient texts, including the Ipuwer Papyrus, suggesting a synchrony between natural catastrophe and cultural upheaval. It further discusses submerged structures, fluvial megatsunami evidence (such as whale carcasses inland), and the geomorphological impacts of sea level changes, earthquakes, and tsunamis—core themes in catastrophist models. The document also references submerged and lost lands in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, the sudden disappearance of civilizations, and the encoding of these events in myth and oral tradition, all of which are central to catastrophist interpretations of ancient history.

Asiatic Echoes The Identification of Ancient Chinese Pictograms in pre-Columbian North American Rock Writing Third Edition Including Supplemental Reports and 54 New Pictogram-glyph Comparison Charts (2016)
https://www.academia.edu/108280346
This suggests the existence of transoceanic contacts and cultural diffusion long before the commonly accepted timeline, potentially as a result of major upheavals or migrations triggered by catastrophic events. The identification of similar pictograms across continents raises questions about ancient population movements, the preservation of knowledge through global disruptions, and the possibility that shared symbols in rock art may encode memories of dramatic natural phenomena or cosmic events—an idea central to many catastrophist theories. Such cross-cultural connections in symbolic rock art also intersect with interests in ancient astronomy and plasma phenomena, as they may reflect a common response to extraordinary events witnessed in the sky, supporting the notion that catastrophic episodes played a formative role in shaping early civilizations and their iconography.

With enough delta-v and time, the comet could “roam” the solar system." {But to be practical, the comet should be within Jupiter's orbit and very small.}
