JWST and Cassiopeia A

Unread post by BeAChooser » Tue Dec 12, 2023 7:32 pm

JWST has released a new and quite beautiful, high definition image of Cassiopeia A, a star that exploded 340 years ago …

https://webbtelescope.org/contents/medi ... ?news=true

Accordion to https://www.popsci.com/science/jwst-supernova-remnant/), there are “some new and surprising features”. As usual, there is no mention of plasma. Instead there are “clumps of bright orange and light pink”, “tiny knots of gas made up of sulfur, oxygen, argon, and neon” and “a mixture of dust and molecules … snip … embedded within the gas”. There is also no mention of electromagnetism, although they acknowledge that the “smoke-like sections of the image” are from “synchrotron radiation generated by charged particles that are hurtling through space at very high speeds and spiraling around magnetic field lines.” They also say the purple and white is “ionized gas” but it’s “caused by supernova debris pushing through and sculpting the gas left behind by the star before it exploded.” No mention of electric currents in the mess.

The Space.com report on this (https://www.space.com/james-webb-space- ... ssiopeia-a), carried by MSN.com makes a point of saying the image “was revealed as part of the 2023 Holidays at the White House celebration and the first-ever White House Advent Calendar by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden”. For people who don’t really believe in Christmas, they mention Christmas seven times in the *science* article. This article adds to the above by talking about “filaments of dust and gas” and “smoke billowing”. It also mentions that some features that were seen in the earlier image from JWST’s MIRI instrument are not visible in the NIRCam image … in particular, a “green monster”, described as a “Grinch-like loop of tree lights."

The Business Insider article (https://www.businessinsider.com/jwst-na ... ed-2023-12) quotes lead researcher Danny Milisavljevic of Purdue University saying “With NIRCam's resolution, we can now see how the dying star absolutely shattered when it exploded, leaving filaments akin to tiny shards of glass behind.” “JWST also uncovered cosmic ‘bullet holes’ behind a green cloud of cosmic gas that previously hid scientist's view, NASA said in an accompanying video. These are thought to be made by ionized gas punching through other gas left behind by the star.”

Now the thing I first noticed when examining closeups of the detailed image linked above is that there are pairs of helically wound filaments scattered throughout the image, especially in the purple and white sections. NONE of the articles reporting this story mention this fact. I think it’s because they can’t explain it, and what they can’t explain, they ignore, unless they can somehow come up with an vague explanation that involves dark matter, black holes or turbulence. But you and I know that helically wound pairs of filaments are indicative of electric currents in plasma filaments.

By the way, here’s a link to the high definition release of the MIRI image (green monster):

Examine the green monster closely and you’ll see that it also appears to contain pairs of helically wound filaments.

You don’t suppose …
