@LLoyd @BeAChooser That was indeed a remarkably clear explanation of jets by Charles Chandler. I am struck once again by how many different phenomena are created via electromagnetism, depending on the relative proportions and quantities of charged particles. It's like a bakery - what will come out of the oven next? A baguette? French Bread? Brioche? Croissants? Fougasse? Pain de Campagne? Perhaps something a little richer: Macarons? Palmier? Tarts? Financiers? Chouquettes? Eclairs?

It is such an elegant system. And if Wal Thornhill's theory of gravity is correct, gravity is just one more manifestation of electromagnetic behavior. Add in the connections to life - primordial proteins, etc.; electromagnetic effects in biochemistry - and it seems electromagnetism is truly the fundamental basis of existence.
Time is what prevents everything from happening all at once.

I don't read most of the articles. Usually, each title has enough info to tell me if the article is interesting enough to deserve listing. There are no more than a few that I read or skim through each week, either because it's especially interesting, or because the title isn't clear enough to understand what the subject is exactly, etc. The weekly lists serve as an archive that I or anyone can go back to if desired. I came back now to review one of the last articles. It took me under 2 hours each week when I was working full-time, but now that I retired, it takes longer, kuz I study some of them more thoroughly.
Looks like a misplaced a few Mars articles above.

This is an interesting article, saying what I believe to be true. First, it reports on various studies that indicate that despite a ten-fold increase in inflation adjusted government spending on science, less is being learned. As one study puts it, the "disruptiveness" of science is less than it used to be And this is occurring in several major fields. A letter to Nature notes, "We find that papers and patents are increasingly less likely to break with the past in ways that push science and technology in new directions."

Then it looks at why this is happening. One possibility is that there is less to learn, blaming materialism for that. But then it notes that "materialism (nature is all there is) can present one of two types of problems. It can be an absolute limit (because it is true) or it can be a self-imposed one (because it is assumed but is not true). In the latter case, the many problems cited today as holding back science are not signs of an approaching absolute limit but simply choices that research establishments have made".

It then quotes experimental physicist Rob Sheldon saying that "NASA had been captured by politics, and politics determined the grants and papers and satellites in all these fields. The doldrums experienced in all the fields I had looked into were essentially political." He goes on to note that "The fact that Elon Musk has been so successful in building rockets and satellites is that he has bypassed federal controls. Fields that have not been captured by federal agencies were flourishing, but they were becoming rare."

Sheldon sums things up thus: "As to the sociology of science, the 20th century was a century of change. When Einstein attended the Solvay conference in 1927, everyone there was a disruptor, an innovator. And everyone there did his science without government funding. Today, it would be hard to find a single scientist in a conference of 1000 who had not received government funding. And with the funding come the strings that hold back disruptors. There are undoubtedly many other factors contributing — the rise of the research university, the arrival of peer review, the publish or perish criteria, the sheer number of career scientists, the exponential rise in publications — but in my mind, it is the government control that is the dominating factor."

I agree. Which is why we the tax payers need to put a stop to government funding of science. Even if it means that thousands of so-called scientists actually have to work for a living, like the rest of us.. And this has to happen not just in the field of astrophysics. It needs to happen in climatology. In virology. In controlled fusion research. Get the government out of it. For the good of the village.
