Mysterious shock wave CRACKS Earth's magnetosphere

mcfc16 (aka Ian w) claimed on another thread that our “non-science” (you know … our interest in ALL that electromagnetism and plasma can really do) has no value compared with the wonders of his gnomes. But I say that our continued failure to really understand how plasma and electromagnetism interact possibly endangers us all. Here ... hot off the wire …

A shock wave barreled toward Earth last night that cracked its magnetosphere, the region that shields our planet from harmful radiation.
The origin of the shockwave is unknown, but astronomers believe it came from an ejection of energetic and highly magnetized, superheated gas released from the sun - also known as a coronal mass ejection (CME).
Gas?

The cause? An M6-class CME.

Just a M … as in medium … class 6.

What happens if there’s an X class, on a scale that currently goes up to X45 (+-5) (based on 2013 analysis of a flare called the Carrington Event in 1859)? There was a X35 (again based on analysis because the event overloaded sensors) in 2003 but fortunately, that CME was mostly directed away from earth. But then there was another X45 in 2012, again fortunately missing the earth … by 9 days.

Now consider the effects.

The Carrington event allowed people people in New England to read a newspaper in the middle of the night without any other source of light.  Auroras were seen in Mexico, Hawaii, Southern China … even as far south as Columbia near the equator. EMP from telegraphs lines started fires. The Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) agency in the US has estimated a Carrington-class event would cause between $0.6 and $2.6 TRILLION dollars in damages in the US alone.

But that’s not all. They estimated power restoration TO THE COUNTRY could take a week in the least affected areas … a year in harder hit areas. And loss of power would mean loss of sewage systems, water supplies, etc. The whole digital economy could collapse. All this could cause untold havoc and unrest … riots and looting. And, ironically, after the 2012 event, the AER estimated it was a once in 500 year event. But the analysis of the Carrington event done in 2013 puts that in doubt now.

Truth is we don’t know how often these events occur, perhaps because astrophysics have been too busy chasing gnomes. Just saying ...

Properly harnessed, that energy could even make a gknoumzeyez glow in the dark.
