Physicists calculated that these mysterious particles will betray their location with heat. To prove it, they’ll need the most powerful telescopes in the cosmos.
So now they want to measure the temperature of exoplanets in order to *prove* the existence of DM. But even the *scientist* pushing this particular gnome, Rebecca Leane with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, admits that the James Webb telescope, as big and expensive as it is (it was planned to cost $1 billion but now will likely to end up costing $10 billion), may not be able to do this. So that means even more expensive telescopes may be *justified* soon based on the DM gnome. Indeed, NASA already has 4 on the drawing board … HabEx, LUVOIR, Lynx, Origins … all *predicted* to cost several billion dollars each (meaning they might cost in the 10's of billions each). Leane will particularly like the Origins Space Telescope which will observe in the Mid to Far infrared ... just the wavelengths needed to detect heat on exoplanets. And it could be as much as 3 times the size of the Webb telescope. Why DM gnome believing astrophysicists must be salivating at the thought of getting to play with that fun toy. Just saying ...
