Because the Earth is a small charged body moving in a large cell of plasma, explanations of all physical phenomena in, on, and near the Earth must take the electrical behavior of plasma into account. Taking this larger picture into account will add new insights for understanding details of everyday phenomena, such as the weather.

The article refers to 300 C charge estimated to have been seen neutralized in that event. With a potential of 10 MV at cloud top to ground it would mean about 0.8 GWh energy was released (or was needed to build it up before). Some thunderstorms have been measured at 1300 MV which would mean about 100 GWh energy! Whole Germany consumes 60 GWh each hour.
