Very rarely, if at all. I have never observed lightning in Antarctica nor heard about a case from anyone else who has been there.
An article on Auroral Electrojets. Polar Jet. Polar wall. Etc. Its the formation that separates the rest of the atmosphere from the polar atmosphere. They can measure intrusion and gas exchanges through the wall by chemical tagging as well as isotope observations.
