Physicists ready to abandon all reason

Has science taken a wrong turn? If so, what corrections are needed? Chronicles of scientific misbehavior. The role of heretic-pioneers and forbidden questions in the sciences. Is peer review working? The perverse "consensus of leading scientists." Good public relations versus good science.

Physicists ready to abandon all reason

Nowadays, as several philosophers at the workshop said, Popperian falsificationism has been supplanted by Bayesian confirmation theory, or Bayesianism, a modern framework based on the 18th-century probability theory of the English statistician and minister Thomas Bayes. Bayesianism allows for the fact that modern scientific theories typically make claims far beyond what can be directly observed — no one has ever seen an atom — and so today’s theories often resist a falsified-unfalsified dichotomy. Instead, trust in a theory often falls somewhere along a continuum, sliding up or down between 0 and 100 percent as new information becomes available. “The Bayesian framework is much more flexible” than Popper’s theory, said Stephan Hartmann, a Bayesian philosopher at LMU. “It also connects nicely to the psychology of reasoning.”
They are looking for a more flexible framework to keep justifying their work in fields such as String theory without the need for experimentation. Welcome to progress in physics where beautiful mathematical models supplant reality.
"First, there appears to be only one version of string theory capable of achieving unification in a consistent way (though it has many different mathematical representations); furthermore, no other “theory of everything” capable of unifying all the fundamental forces has been found, despite immense effort."
Because they are unwilling to go back and recheck their basic assumptions. :x

Hello Zendo,

The article you point to is "interesting", the latest - including for silliness of the highest order. It also shows the frailty of human nature. For many of the EU people, they may lose their patience listening to what the people there talk.

Of course, all of us have an opinion ... as they say... According to the mainstream, this Thunderbolt forum should be disbanded... as bandits should be disbanded. But history seems to indicate that true human progress comes from "dynastic" changes - from the fringe.

Hi Chan Rasjid, I think it is the mainstream that should be disbanded. They are truly wasting a fortune of taxpayers money on hot air and delusions. The only real cosmological model that makes any sense is the electric/plasma universe. It scores huge advantages over other models because everything that is observed can be reproduced on a small scale in a laboratory. Because of this, the principles of electricity and plasma can be utilised by human beings to work in the real world. There are already hundreds, if not thousands of applications which are used by us for different purposes. Just on a practical/financial level the 'electric/plasma' universe wins hands down over the black magic of the dark energy, dark holes and dark matter. I expect gravity will be described in an electromagnetic way soon, if it hasn't already been done.
There does seem to be a serious psychological problem in the academic society when it cannot accept that perhaps previous theories need to be discarded or rewritten. I feel it is all part the war on understanding, about which I made a previous post.
