"The Fog Clears" grammar error

Hundreds of TPODs have been published since the summer of 2004. In particular, we invite discussion of present and recent TPODs, perhaps with additional links to earlier TPOD pages. Suggestions for future pages will be welcome. Effective TPOD drafts will be MORE than welcome and could be your opportunity to become a more active part of the Thunderbolts team.

"The Fog Clears" grammar error

Unread post by mamuso » Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:45 am

“It seems that reionisation must have happened quicker [sic] than astronomers previously thought.” Although the grammar is in error, we can be sure the math is correct.
I'm translating the TPOD, but I can't see the grammar error here. Please someone explain me! My english is not so good!

From the author,

[...]

"quicker" is an adjective: used to modify a noun.
"happened" is a verb: requires an adverb for modification, i.e., "quickly."

Correct form: "happened quickly"

I think I understand it now. So it should be "[...]must have happened more quickly than astronomers[...]"
I will take this into account in the translation.
Thank you!

mmm...
I'm seeing here on acceptation 19, and here that "quick" can be used as an adverb.
If the point is that, maybe Mel is being a bit too fussy with that?

It may be acceptable to use quick as an adverb but it makes you sound like an ignoramus if you do :D

It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong.

Normal science does not aim at novelties of fact or theory and, when successful, finds none.

Again, from the author.

[...]

The word in question wasn't "quick" (which is acceptable to use as an adverb in informal speech but not in formal writing), but "quicker" (see original press release), which is the comparative form of the adjective & is NEVER acceptable to use as an adverb.
