"Beauty Writ Large" or "Solar polar flow in- or outbound?"

Unread post by Shelgeyr » Wed May 12, 2010 8:44 pm

This is a coronal mass ejection (CME) with the Earth shown to scale: (http://www.nustar.caltech.edu/uploads/i ... ection.jpg)

This is the solar corona, with flares, prominences, and CMEs shown as tiny things around the eclipsed sun: (http://www.zam.fme.vutbr.cz/~druck/ecli ... 50_mo1.png)

This shows coronal structure at a mighty scale: (http://www.zam.fme.vutbr.cz/~druck/ecli ... mm_mid.png)

And THIS is beauty writ large: (http://www.zam.fme.vutbr.cz/~druck/ecli ... 00_mo1.png)

So, is the Solar polar flow inbound or outbound? I can't really tell, but I'm hoping it is inbound.

Thermal convection? This thing is electric!

For more beautiful photography, see Alan Friedman's web page

Look under his solar photos for electrifying images! His other work isn't too bad, either...

That link brings up a web host. Have you got anything else?

Try the above... I just Googled the guy's name and sun pictures.

Seems to be the right one? Some pics are pretty nifty.

Yep; you're right. I was doing it fast and by memory, a dangerous pastime for those of us on the western slopes of life. Thanks for the correction, Mike. I need all the help I can get.

I believe it is inbound at the poles. Flares are magnetic fields that have no where to go. Magnetic energy is fed into the system as the primary power source through induction and drives the electric and plasma process. If the Sun were Iron based then it's movement through a magnetic field would induce it and charged particles would race outward or inward depending on polarity and plasma would be contained by these fields also. But enough speculation from me for one night. It's 3:00 AM that's my excuse.. heh
