NASA launches satellite to help forecast solar storms

Post by Tzunamii » Fri Feb 26, 2010 7:30 am

From the article HERE
Insights into universe's plasma.... For one, the sun represents a powerful lab for studying the behavior of turbulent plasmas, which generate electrical currents and magnetic fields. “Most of the universe that isn't dark energy or dark matter is plasma,” says Dr.[Alan] Title, referring to a state of matter that consists of hot, ionized gas.
Well that's good to know...
So how long before they just cut the crap & pop their devoted followers balloon??

That's one baby step for the Conventional Wisdom, since the author neglects to adjust the huge dark energy and dark matter fraction downward (toward zero) in his explanation.

It seems somewhat heartening to even read the word plasma in a post from a scientist in the cosmological context, until you remember that they still will not treat a plasma as having anything to do with electric currents, except in a tiny fraction of the cases. Those usually involve solar observers dealing with real effects from nearby measurable sources (more like engineers than theoreticians, in other words, faced with actual measurements and observable characteristics and phenomena). Recently, even Birkeland currents and current sheets are starting to creep past their tight li'l lips... Elsewhere, no one can afford to stray too far from the fold, as there be Electric Dragons beyond. It's still all about magnetic fields and stellar dynamos... The suite of instruments on SDO probably isn't looking for signs of electrical current or field activity (I have to go back and check on that) but instead are scanning the E/M spectrum to create images to be evaluated optically an AU from the Sun.

BTW, here's some more on Dr. Title. He's an interesting fellow, and would probably be a good conversationalist over a beer.
