Frozen gas

Unread post by jacmac » Sat Nov 03, 2018 6:58 am

From Ben Davidson this morning we have this link:
https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/20 ... solar-wind
Describing the Comet McNaught, NASA says:
Comets are cosmic crumbs of frozen gas, rock and dust left over from the formation of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago
It appears that the dirty snowball or ice part of this comet has become "frozen gas".
And this statement:
this is strong evidence that the dust is electrically charged, and that the solar wind is affecting the motion of that dust.”
Now both the ion tail and the dust tail are electrically charged.
This seems to be a step in the right direction.

Perhaps the reference to "frozen gas" is to recognize whatever molecular material comprises the comet, perhaps some metals but particularly hydrocarbons and water, can only be frozen solid or sublimate to the gas phase because they cannot exist in the liquid state in the space environment.
