Very interesting hypothesis indeed. Makes a lot of sense.
Then it seems that any dense and hot material would produce elemental transmutations - ? As well as almost any electrochemical system (given the appropriate matter fluxes). So if this is true, one might produce (trace amounts of) various elements literally just with 1.5 V battery and some substrate material.
