(A String Theory for the Sun; Jul 17, 2008)
Filamentary Birkeland currents transport electrical energy from the Sun to Earth and the rest of the Solar System. Could ancient human beings have seen this phenomenon visible in their skies?

Re: A String Theory for the Sun
Actually, Birkeland currents were first confirmed way back in 1973 by the Triad satellite. NASA, however, appears to have forgotten this when making the new THEMIS "discovery" public, likewise Birkeland's prescience back in 1908.The existence of these twisted filamentary bundles of magnetic fields that transport ions through space along their length was only empirically confirmed in 2007, when NASA’s fleet of THEMIS spacecraft announced to have detected “giant magnetic ropes that connect Earth’s upper atmosphere to the Sun” in the earth’s magnetopause. Solar wind particles are believed to flow in along these ropes, “providing energy for geomagnetic storms and auroras.”
As noted in an article I proffered for consumption on NowPublic:
It's Okay to Call the "Magnetic Flux Ropes" Found Connecting the Sun and Earth an Electric Current!
(Electric Currents from Space)

So, it seems 2007 was simply a re-discovery/re-confirmation of the 1973 triad confirmation of Birkeland's 1908 predictions.Although signs of currents flowing from space along magnetic field lines were occasionally detected by earlier satellites, it was the US Navy's Triad, carrying the instrument of Alfred Zmuda and James Armstrong, that in 1973 traced their full pattern. Triad was an experimental navigation satellite, and it circled the Earth in a low altitude orbit which went from pole to pole, while the Earth rotated beneath it. Zmuda and Armstrong were allowed to place on it a magnetometer as an extra "piggyback experiment," and it continued to return scientific data for many years after the Navy's experiment had ended.
When Triad crossed a current sheet, a characteristic "signature" was generally noted: the direction of the magnetic field rotated fairly abruptly, while its strength stayed practically the same. From such rotations a wealth of information was extracted about the structure and variation of the currents. Tragically, both experimenters had died by the time their article on "Birkeland currents" appeared in 1974.
I've tried to contact NASA to have them correct their story or issue a new story that reaffirms Birkeland's connection and that made in 1973, but have thusfar been unable to reach anyone directly, as all e-mail contact points have bounced back invalid. Tried contacting the author directly, but have not heard back.

Well I don't know about this because the description could refer to run-raysMGmirkin wrote:(A String Theory for the Sun; Jul 17, 2008)
