Secrets of Sleep

What is a human being? What is life? Can science give us reliable answers to such questions? The electricity of life. The meaning of human consciousness. Are we alone? Are the traditional contests between science and religion still relevant? Does the word "spirit" still hold meaning today?

Summary
Why do we sleep? Although science has yet to explain the reason we spend one-third of our lives in this bizarre state, an exciting theory suggests that sleep can solidify newly learned memories by rewiring the architecture of brain. Emerging neuroscience evidence also indicates that sleep can intelligently associate and integrate new memories together, performing a kind of "sleep-dependent alchemy." This phenomenon may fuel creative human insights, often reflected in dream content. In addition to memory benefits, recent findings also suggest that sleep can "refresh" emotional brain reactivity, smoothing away the rough edges from our prior waking concerns, thereby allowing rational next-day decisions. Thinking about skimping on your Zs? You'd better tune in to hear what UC Berkeley's Matt Walker has to say about it first!

I went through a 12 day period with no sleep in Nov 2006 due to incredible herniated disc pain and a broken back. I could not lie down....it felt like being cut in half by a guillotine!
I beat the world record!

"The Guinness previous record was for 11½ days, or 276 hours, and was set by Toimi Soini in Hamina, Finland, between February 5 to 15, 1964.

I thought I went insane!
:?

I finally got an electric orthopedic chair and slept for the first time in 12 days.

I stayed in it for 18 months!

I can now sleep on a bed again.

I went through something similar last year, though the period without sleep was much shorter.
I think the description "insane" is not adequate, I personally think one actually starts to see the contours of the real world, but most people are not able to interpret that yet. However, I assume your description was metaphorical as is mine.

Dream telepathy is a very interesting subject. I have two short stories to tell that took place in my area. 1- A local lady was dreaming that her place of business was on fire. She woke up with the intention of going down town to check and make sure that it was just a dream. When she looked out the window the house across the street was on fire. No one was hurt. 2- A young man in his early 20's is riding his motorcycle home from a party late one night with his girl friend following a short distance behind. The youny man speeds up to get a thrill, pulling out of sight of the girl following. He misjudges his speed (70 MPH)around a curve and leaves the road. The cycle upon entering the ditch begins to flip end over end. At some point the riders ribs are crushed under the weight of the bike punchering a lung. When the girl following reaches there destination and finds her friend not there she begins to worry and begins to backtrack. She finds the young man along the road where he was able to drag himself, lungs filling up with blood. Had she not had her head about her he may have died. He lived and is just fine now. While this event is takeing place the young mans grandfather is sound asleep 5 miles north of the accident site, dreaming of a man who can not breath because his chest is rolled flat. Like a steam roller had run over his chest. Jerry.

I had a precognative dream of my accident when I was ten. I even woke up with a "neurological" symptom that lasted 24 hours. I clearly remember my dream to this day and the day that followed, where everything felt 5 inches thick...like I was in a new body for the first time. Nothing felt right, so I would not get out of bed. I told my parents about the dream and that was why I was feeling "in a new body"....I hated it, it felt so yucky....way to thick.
:?
My accident occured in 2003, I had the dream in 1972. It has always been the "dark corner" to me....and so it shall remain.
