A sudden change in policy about Space Rocks

Has science taken a wrong turn? If so, what corrections are needed? Chronicles of scientific misbehavior. The role of heretic-pioneers and forbidden questions in the sciences. Is peer review working? The perverse "consensus of leading scientists." Good public relations versus good science.

A sudden change in policy about Space Rocks

Post by SciRPG » Sun Jun 14, 2009 12:35 pm

A Space.com article:
For 15 years, scientists have benefited from data gleaned by U.S. classified satellites of natural fireball events in Earth's atmosphere – but no longer.

A recent U.S. military policy decision now explicitly states that observations by hush-hush government spacecraft of incoming bolides and fireballs are classified secret and are not to be released, SPACE.com has learned.

The satellites' main objectives include detecting nuclear bomb tests, and their characterizations of asteroids and lesser meteoroids as they crash through the atmosphere has been a byproduct data bonanza for scientists.

The upshot: Space rocks that explode in the atmosphere are now classified.

There is a lot of stuff that is classified secrets that will not be released. Creating more and taking back what they "shared" is no surprise to me.

Personally, I'm curious on the "why" they are taking such a stance.

I'm not big on the UFO/Aliens theories. I havent seen enough material to prompt me into thinking ETI.
Perhaps this is more clamping down on wild "naive" theories from "naive" theorists, lol.

This is foolish. We are all in this together. If some smart people can come up with ion-guns, then we should be able to direct threats to a safer place. This thought propogates beyond the doomsday scenario. We should be able to control weather.
