There is no conflict there. Think of it as a simple (xy) two dimensional representation of a single loop of a helix within a three dimensional (xyz) space.
If you guys already are applying the explanation of Birkland currents to these "spots on the carpet", what is the big deal with "magnetism to conduct the heat"? If you know you have the electrical current flowing through the plasma, doesn't that explain the energy you're witnessing?

And again, I apologize for the post above this one- I had missed your reply to Junglelord. You see so many people working in Astronomy these days that are completely ignorant (or perhaps oblivious) of basic electrical physics :\
