Why I believed in Black Holes!

Beyond the boundaries of established science an avalanche of exotic ideas compete for our attention. Experts tell us that these ideas should not be permitted to take up the time of working scientists, and for the most part they are surely correct. But what about the gems in the rubble pile? By what ground-rules might we bring extraordinary new possibilities to light?

Why I believed in Black Holes!

Unread post by junglelord » Sat May 10, 2008 7:23 am

I began playing drums at ten. By the time I was 16 in 1976, being canadian, I became heavily influenced by the Canadian rock trio Rush, and especially by their drummer Neil Peart aka the professor. Neil would write a song called Cygnus X-1, a song about the first discovered blackhole. It was also at the age of 16 I got the book Einstein’s Universe. My belief in black holes was born!

These are the lyrics. The first two verses are done as voice through a synthesizer, very cool.
CYGNUS X-1
In the constellation of cygnus
There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
The black hole
Of cygnus x-1

Six stars of the northern cross
In mourning for their sisters loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night....

1
Invisible
To telescopic eye
Infinity
The star that would not die

All who dare
To cross her course
Are swallowed by
A fearsome force

Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized ---- at the core
Or through the astral door ----
To soar....

2
I set a course just east of lyra
And northwest of pegasus
Flew into the light of deneb
Sailed across the milky way

On my ship, the rocinante
Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of cygnus
Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the black hole ----
Gains control....

3
Spinning, whirling,
Still descending
Like a spiral sea,
Unending

Sound and fury
Drowns my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart....

This is not a myspace page JL. Putting a title with black holes in it doesnt make this relevent at all to the forum.

Yes it does. Black holes are not real. That is a mad idea. I came here believing in black holes. I mearly wanted to tell people why I had such a mad idea for years and how it came about personally for me.

Some people like Dave Smith always knew the universe was electric and always knew black holes were not real.

I was not so intuitive.
:D

My intent was for the thread to be a discussion of why anyone believed in black holes for so long, if they did, and maybe a personal story like mine.

After all the EU pulled us out of that classical mess.

I am now a great man.

I don't know...Rush are kind of a "conceptual" band, you tend to get a lot more than just music when you buy a Rush album. As a result people are strongly invested in them and identify themselves as "Rush fans".

Likewise, Blackholes. A complicated concept and requires some brainbending to get your head around it. The process of understanding the black hole concept changes the way you think and by the end you can't help but be invested in it. I believe that is why so many people are so blind when it comes to this particular piece of metaphysics.

Neil Peart wrote the preceeding album, 2112, based on his study of Ayn Rand.
;)

Understanding Ayn Rand via the music of Rush, Lyrics of Neil Peart to be exact.

Good for you Junglelord,

First that you are playing drums and second that you don’t believe in black holes.

Science have a long way, before understanding this blurry pictures of black holes.
I think what Black Holes really do, is to attract theories and wrong conclusions, spin
them in an spiral orbit, swallow them and toss them away…

There are so many things to understand right here under our noses to figure out,
much before getting to black holes or at least what appear to be a black hole.

Though, there are a few questions about black holes I never understood :
1. The common explanation is that matter can become so dense that even light cannot
escape it’s gravitation grip. So how can such a matter be made of atoms ?
We may need to have atoms with 1/1,000,000,000 the size of the atoms we know of.
2. If black hole have it’s own tremendous mass, what this mass is made of ?
There is no limit to how much matter could be dense ?
3. If light cannot escape and x-rays can escape, how converted matter become X-rays ?
And if it’s true that it emits X-rays, what happen with this emission ? Does it become
matter somewhere else (like light) ?
4. If there are black holes in the center of galaxies, are not they part of the mechanism
of the galaxy ? In other words, like we have the sun in the center of the solar system,
black holes can have the same function ? Like being the axis for the whole galaxy ?

It may be that black holes exists as an observation, but not sufficiently explained yet.

Cheers

I certainly had an affinity for black holes due to the connection at 16 years of age and the Einsteins Universe book and the song Cygnus X-1. Because I had this love affair with Einstein and Peart....well love is blind!

Ayn Rand, never cared for it.
I will always love Rush, Einstein, and the EU
