Hello Seasmith-

According to one NASA "scientist", he thought the "impact craters" were fill with lava. He also had no idea what made the ray structure radiating from the craters pictured above.

You're right, the thing does look like a bar magnet under a surface sprinkled with iron filings! :o :o :o

Osmosis,

Maybe 2 flux-field sets:
One local "bar" shaped.
One global, or a spherical magnet.

The 'lines' most likely non-dynamic artifacts now frozen in what is now an obviously crystalized surface, although apparently without the particulate embellishments of a Mars ??

I don`t think there should be any field lines on the surface itself and how on earth (erm,.. on mercury) and by what process could these be imprinted on the surface? Mr. Thornhill? Anyone?

NASA Space Weather post of the day. The way they talk about things in cosmology often makes me wonder, (fruity nature) are they laughing at us?
:?
MESSENGER's high-precision flyby of Mercury on Monday yielded a surprise: one side of the planet looks like a peeled tangerine: photo. The illusion is created by globe-straddling rays, which emerge from a crater near Mercury's north pole:
http://spaceweather.com/swpod2008/09oct ... oig3tdqfn1

This high-resolution snapshot, taken as MESSENGER was flying away from the planet, shows the "tangerine stripes" converging on their source. It is a young, unnamed crater about 68 miles in diameter. Radars on Earth had seen this crater before, but never in much detail. MESSENGER's close-up photography has revealed its fruity nature for the first time.

No one knows what made the crater a comet? an asteroid? or why the debris flew so far from the impact site. Answers may emerge as mission scientists analyze additional photos and sensor readings MESSENGER is beaming back now. Meanwhile, it's a Mercury mystery; browse the flyby gallery for more.

Is that a hole in the crater? It looks deeper than an "impact" would make it!

Electric Scaring 101
Seems to me that the pole would maybe take the biggest charge disruption as we see here.

True.

It's also interesting to note the different polar configurations, such as the Martian polar spiral or the hexagon and polygon polar features of Saturn and Enceladus respectively. Add to these the concentric ring-like pole configuration of Jupiter's moon Callisto and there seems to be no consistent account within current astrophysics or astronomy to provide a unifying causative agent for such diverse features. And the vortex spin of Venus etc.

Electro-plasma dynamic can geometricize in this manner and this is the story the polar configurations reveal.

New data from Mercury per "Space.com"
Other instruments aboard MESSENGER found strong interactions between Mercury’s magnetic field and the sun’s solar wind, which led to supercharged energy exchanges equivalent to the output of about 100 medium-sized power plants on Earth, researchers said.

“That was just a knock-your-socks-off observation,” said Brian Anderson, MESSENGER’s deputy project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. “We weren’t expecting it to be that intense at all.”

Do you have direct linkage to that? I wonder what 'form' these "energy exchanges" take?

I believe this is the link to the article, but it doesn't add much really.

Hmm...
Subtle deviations in the position of Mercury will occur as a result of charge transfer with the Sun due to the planet’s eccentric orbit. Charge transfer alters the internal electrical stress of Mercury. That subtly alters the planet’s mass, which by the law of conservation of orbital energy shifts its orbit. -Astronomical Myths of Mercury & the Sun

New from Mercury

Unread post by solrey » Thu Apr 30, 2009 2:02 pm

Just taking a break from gardening (gorgeous day here) and ran into this. I'm sure we'll be seeing a TPOD about this real soon.
Gotta run. All I can say is WOW!! 8-)

Messenger also spotted an impact basin that is “unlike anything I have ever seen anywhere in the solar system,” said Watters, the lead author on a paper focusing on this funny feature. The basin, dubbed Rembrandt, is one of the biggest and youngest craters on Mercury. If it were on Earth, its edges would extend from Boston to Washington, D.C. But for Rembrandt, size doesn’t matter. It’s what’s inside that counts.
Rembrandt is only partially filled with volcanic material. Even stranger is its pattern of ridges and troughs, which lie side by side in a radial pattern from the center, rather than being confined to either the rim or the middle.

“That pattern is like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” Watters said. “We’re going to have to go back and rethink the way that we generate these stresses in these basins.”

Earth has an atmosphere and a strong magnetic field to protect it from the constant stream of ions ejected from the sun at supersonic speeds known as the solar wind. Mercury is not so lucky. Its magnetic field is just 1 percent the strength of Earth’s, and it has no atmosphere to speak of. What atmosphere it has is tenuous and extremely variable, made up mostly of sodium one day and mostly calcium the next.

This leaves its surface vulnerable to being ravaged by the solar wind at the best of times. Messenger flew by at a particularly bad moment, and ran right through a magnetic tornado.

Magnetic tornadoes form when the magnetic field in the solar wind links up to the field generated by a planet, a process called magnetic reconnection. Bundles of magnetic field lines connect the surface of the planet directly to the surface of the sun, and as the solar wind pushes them away from the sun, they twist and whirl like cyclones. On Earth, these cyclones (technically called “flux transfer events”) dance on the ionosphere, creating the Northern Lights and messing up GPS systems.

On Mercury, though, the twisters were 10 times as strong as any magnetic cyclones observed on Earth. With so little atmosphere to interfere, Mercury’s magnetic tornadoes are great spinning chutes that ionized gas can slide down.

“They act as magnetic channels or open windows that allow solar wind plasma from the sun, very fast and very hot, to come right down those field lines and impacts the surface,” said Jim Slavin of NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center. When the gas hits the surface, it knocks off neutrally-charged atoms and sends them on a loop high into the sky.
“Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality"

April 30, 2009: NASA spacecraft gliding over the surface of Mercury has revealed that the planet's atmosphere, magnetosphere, and its geological past display greater levels of activity than scientists first suspected. The probe also discovered a large impact basin named "Rembrandt" measuring about 430 miles in diameter -- equal to the distance between Washington and Boston.

"The third Mercury flyby is our final dress rehearsal for the main performance of our mission, the insertion of the probe into orbit around Mercury in March 2011," said Solomon. "The orbital phase will be like staging two flybys per day and will provide the continuous collection of information about the planet and its environment for one year."
