Mystery stone circles found on Mars

Unread post by FS3 » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:07 pm

Using cameras on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter at a region in the Elysium Planitia near the equator rings up to 23 metres across made up of stones sorted by size into concentric bands have been discovered.

Image

From the New Scientist:
...On Earth, similar structures form via repeated freezing and thawing of ice, but with the stones sorted into layers. Water in soil under stones freezes faster than in surrounding soil, and the expanding ice pushes the stones upwards. Larger stones rise faster, and so layers sorted by size form...
There can be another explanation as well. Similar to the "dune" structure inmidst of the Victoria Crater we may see traces of a plasma discharge! Those patterns may point towards traces of the central column of a huge lightening, similar to the patterns on the surface of those Moeraki Boulders found in Newzealand:

Is it a coincidence that those patterns on the surface reasemble the "continental-plates" on Earth? Just scaled down a bit...

Hi,

Well the good news would be that if there is/was water on Mars and CO2, in all likelihood there are crude oil reserves there too.

If CO2 is abasorbed by rain water and carried to great depths to form carbon deoposits, imagine the amount of oil under the surface of Mars due to the reverse runaway greenhouse event that occurred there.

Think of the space tankers! Interesting thought.

Hi,

Where there is oil there is methane.

Hi all,

As this subject is in vogue these days ie the discovery of methane on Mars;

Could you please elaborate further?

Hi John and welcome aboard,
Perhaps tolenio was alluding to:
Making gas out of crude oil
Understanding how crude oil biodegrades into methane, or natural gas, opens the door to being able to recover the clean-burning methane directly from deeply buried, or in situ, oil sands deposits, says Steve Larter, U of C petroleum geologist in the Department of Geoscience who headed the Calgary contingent of the research team.

or similar.

Hi Grey Cloud and thanks for your welcome.

Also thanks for the link.

Perhaps I am out of sync here (the thread being 'Water on Mars'), but as methane was mentioned in passing, I am interested to know where the methane on Mars actually came from.

Was this methane once part of an external hydrocarbon (petroleum) source that poured down onto the planet and entered the many cracks and fissures (Velikovsky style) and from time to time is being released through various sub-surface vents due temperatures/pressures from below?

JohnMT,

Welcome John,
You may want to peruse this earlier relevant thread:

Speaking of rovers, I see that the Martian windstorms have again cleaned the photocell panels. Grab your hats!

Given that electric discharge is responsible for the terrain, mistaken as created by erosion, then perhaps methane was created at the same time in a process similar to what's described in the link below. It could be trapped as permafrost in the, iron rich, cold martian soil and occassionally released in various areas as surface conditions and seasons change.

While there is no doubt in my mind that mars may be a strange electrically scarred world, it may have a far more denser atmosphere and a lot more water then we are led to believe.

Now to my simple mind it seems if Mars's atmosphere was really this thin(0.13 psi) and cold( -200 F) in winters at the poles( where phoenix is) the should be no water condensation! But morning frost as it so happens often on cold Washington nights. It does not rain and is not cloudy but in the morning everything is covered with a thin layer of frost. Shouldn't this be true on mars too? Unless it is raining? Or a lot warmer?
Today is the yesterday of tomorrow.

To me, the photo reproduced here is the most amazing evidence I have seen of frozen liquid, whether h20 or c02 I have no idea, on Mars:

Please note: I am not advocating everything on this site, which I recognize is a bit too speculative, perhaps to the point of absurdity in some instances, for most. But some of the visual evidence, like this particular image, is provocative.

University of Colorado team finds definitive evidence for ancient lake on Mars
First unambiguous evidence for shorelines on the surface of Mars, say researchers

* Here's the image.
Image
* It looks like a rille to me, not a shoreline. And we've heard about how rilles are formed. See especially http://www.kronia.com/library/electrical1.html .
* It seems that Mars may have had water, a thicker atmosphere and even life, but that most of them were destroyed in electrical exchanges 4500 years or so ago. So it'd be unlikely that much, if any, evidence will be found on the surface of Mars, since a deep layer of the northern hemisphere was apparently EDMed and deposited in the southern hemisphere, as suggested at http://thunderbolts.info/tpod/2005/arch ... osnote.htm .
