Prozac Nation

What is a human being? What is life? Can science give us reliable answers to such questions? The electricity of life. The meaning of human consciousness. Are we alone? Are the traditional contests between science and religion still relevant? Does the word "spirit" still hold meaning today?

Prozac Nation

Unread post by mnemeth1 » Wed Feb 04, 2009 2:24 pm

I discuss the fact that half of the UK is on the drug Prozac.

24 million out of 60 million are on Prozac in the UK.

There's so much of it being consumed it is contaminating the water supply.

SSRIs directly affect the reproductive system and of course the entire mental state of their consumers.

This can only lead to big big trouble.

Hi mnemeth1,
It doesn't actually say that 24 million folk are on the drug but that 24 million prescriptions are dished out annually.
As to the pollution of the water supply, with all the chemicals that are in it, it is a wonder there is any room left for water.

You are correct; however, Prozac is generally a long term prescription.

Its not a "try it for a week and see how you like it" kind of thing.

If they are issuing 24 million perscriptions of prozac there are probably at least that many people on it at any one time. Keep in mind that they are just talking about prozac, which only one kind of SSRI - there are dozens of such drugs. So I'm pretty confident that when you throw in all the other SSRI perscriptions you got a tally that's OVER 24 million people who are being medicated.

In fact the drug has warnings on it against abruptly stopping the medication.

Hi M,
I still think your maths is wrong but I agree that whatever the figure it is too high. If nothing else it is a damning indictment of Britain that so many people feel they need to take anti-depressants. Or, looked at another way, a damning indictment of Britain that people have to be drugged in order to feel happy. And the fact that a substantial percentage of these people are children doesn't bear thinking about.
