Scientific bias prevents scientific progress

Has science taken a wrong turn? If so, what corrections are needed? Chronicles of scientific misbehavior. The role of heretic-pioneers and forbidden questions in the sciences. Is peer review working? The perverse "consensus of leading scientists." Good public relations versus good science.

Scientific bias prevents scientific progress

Unread post by Zyxzevn » Mon Aug 08, 2016 6:19 am

I just saw this commentary on the SuspiciousObservers youtube channel.
Jeffrey Love's Response

It is about circular logic.
Scientists are ignoring new science, because they think it is not published in
the magazines where they publish their own stuff. But because these same
scientists are peer-reviewers of these magazines, they simply block any
new science.

Even worse. They will block any science that they do not understand or that
shows problems in their own research.

The way this peer-review system is organized in science is very similar to the "Creation Museum".

Don't tell the Clown Prince of Science!, who is about to invalidate the whole and substance of all the world's centuries of philosophy and replace them with what amounts to, as a feminist once famously said, a fish's bicycle.

According to him, here comes a single sentence proclamation of a magic solution for everything, if we only knew what it was.

Apparently it hasn't occurred to this guy (or maybe it has) that claiming you found the intellectual equivalent of the fountain of youth isn't the same thing as it actually existing, notwithstanding how many cheering acolytes you can sign up beforehand, none of whom have seen what's really behind the curtain.

We all have our limitations.
The more you are invested in a system or way of thinking the more you resist the change.
Power and control, saving face and maintaining funding.
I'm sure many people who are limiting science think they are doing an important job keeping science "pure" or protecting the "good reputation" of science.

There is a story on Andrew Marino's Blog of Philip Handler that discusses the mess of science, actually there are many stories about the mess of science on his blog. Andrew Marino worked with Robert Becker in studying bioelectromagnetics and had run ins with many science power brokers on the effects of unnatural EMFs. Although i warn there is a NSFW (not safe for work) picture with the Philip Handler story but it is worth reading to the end to hear about the dream he had relating to the picture.

It's also worth mentioning Thomas Kuhn on this subject in his "The structure of scientific revolution". If I remember correctly, he concludes that the only method for more people to adapt improved techniques is for those who champion the old techniques to die out. So, these things take a generation. A relevant analogy is the discovery of public coin systems 8 years ago. Plan accordingly.
