Re: Cold injection or heat escape?

Unread post by upriver » Mon Dec 28, 2015 9:36 pm

The only thing I am missing are direct observations of cold neutrals and ions moving down the polar cusps. There is no doubt that it is cold there. This is the area where the electro jet is most functional. Cold comes from lower energy molecules... Heat is lost most quickly in this zone at the polar regions. The way to lose energy quickly is to circulate the coldest ions through an area(or drag cold neutrals through)... Maybe thats what the electrojet does....
This zone intrudes into the earths atmosphere and is kept separate by the electrical action of the energy provided by the sun....

Is there ever lightning in Antarctica?

Very rarely, if at all. I have never observed lightning in Antarctica nor heard about a case from anyone else who has been there.
Now Inuits are seeing lightning...

An article on Auroral Electrojets. Polar Jet. Polar wall. Etc. Its the formation that separates the rest of the atmosphere from the polar atmosphere. They can measure intrusion and gas exchanges through the wall by chemical tagging as well as isotope observations.

A change in the electro jet is causing the earth to get a little colder.

"solar wind dynamic pressure Pdyn, but additionally there appears an enhanced convection speed (cross polar cap potential) for very low values of Pdyn."

The blast of Arctic air this week set some temperature records in parts of the South and East, but that wasn't the only type of record that was broken.

Typically Arctic air masses that invade the United States are accompanied by strong high pressure systems. In the case of the bone-chilling air that invaded the central and eastern states during the middle part of this week, the area of high pressure was exceptionally strong. In fact, some cities in the northern and central Plains set records for the highest atmospheric pressure ever recorded in any month of the year.

Maybe I'll play with the OMNI II dataset to see what the pdyn solar wind was doing on that day.....

http://omniweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/html/ow_data.html

As you can see the cold air is pushed by high pressure into the atmosphere. Its probably tied to fluctuations in the pdyn solar wind dynamic pressure and the yearly change in configuration of the earths local plasma flows and magnetic fields. However there is a long term trend downward in temperature as shown by satellite data...
That could be cold fluctuations/modulations that last a little longer in each part of the cycle like pulse width modulation...........

In the winter months the earth is tilted into the magneto tail more than in the summer months. The magnetotail has colder ions and neutrals the the solar facing plasma side...

I'm pretty sure at this point that the Field aligned currents/ magnetospheric footprint allow/cause the cold air to flow down to the earth. Similar to a pressurized air conditioning system??

"and when Polar Wind is overlaid with Temperature, you can clearly see the cold “air from very high altitudes” that descends “through the center of the vortex, moving air to lower altitudes over several months,” “NASA” (Click the pic to animate):

"The only logical conclusion was that greenhouses heat up, NOT because the glass roof blocks infrared radiation from getting out, but simply because the window, no matter whether of glass or salt, blocks hot air from getting out! Whether the greenhouse roof blocks infrared light or not makes no difference."

Hi Webo,
As the jet streams are drug along by the "rotation of a spherical earth" (while at same time being deflected with the Coriolis effect),
why do they accelerate Beyond the rotational speed of the earth's surface and actually advance past the surface at ≠300mph ?
thanks,s
It's a question asked of my 8th grade science teacher, who laid out a scenario much like the one you did in the Future of Science forum; which pretty well explains the steering of the Jet Streams, but i am still missing the reason for their acceleration well beyond, while in the same direction as, the earth's surface rotation speed.
Naturally these days, one would suspect a connection with electric 'ring currents' or the like, but i don't have a clear picture in mind.
Anyone have a good theory ? Thanks

Seasmith,
I will happily answer your question here. I have been very busy with a home remodel project and moving/downsizing which has occupied nearly all my time for several months.

The wind velocity issue is due to the fact that the earth's surface rotates at different speeds due to its being a sphere, hence surfaces at the equator rotate at 1670 km per hour, but around where I live [the Pacific Northwest of the US] the surface rotates at more like 1170 km per hour, hence air blowing northward from the equator might appear from the surface reference as moving eastward up to 500 kph. This differential is responsible for the Coriolis effect, which shows up on a flat map as winds veering toward the right in the northern hemisphere and toward the left in the southern. Inertia causes some countercurrents, somewhat like stirring a bit of foam on the top your latte: as you stir across the cup in one direction, other "streams" of foam move in the opposite. In the atmosphere this turbulence results in the reinforcement of wind speeds around the 60th parallel [N/S] which due to several randomizing causes I alluded to in the other thread creates a winding wavestream at the upper latitudes. In the low pressure scenario of heated equatorial zones, rising water vapor from the oceans creates updrafts [the water vapor is less dene than air so rises through it] which are so powerful that during the warm months the huge heat engines produce hurricanes and cyclones. These cyclonic zones of low pressure rotate counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern, but if you watch some visible or infrared satellite loops, you will see that at the upper altitudes of these storms the winds are in fact rotating in accordance with Coriolis. So an additional altitude based region of turbulence is created to further randomize the turbulence caused by latitude based considerations. The differences in atmospheric pressure with altitude [adiabatics] and the affect this has on the phase changes in water vapor causes additional counterintuitive effects, eg. the fact that water droplets can persist as liquid in an adiabatically supercooled cloud at very low temperatures, eg. between 0 and -20 C. STP conditions at the earth's surface/sea level where we live, along with our inertial reference frame on the rotating surface create something of a paradigm about water behavior and weather that makes atmospheric science counterintuitive to many folks.
Truth extends beyond the border of self-limiting science. Free discourse among opposing viewpoints draws the open-minded away from the darkness of inevitable bias and nearer to the light of universal reality.

Hexagonal clouds, the hexagon being suggestive of plasma phenomena, what do you think?
