Something I learned from my teaching days. 9512 atoms in a RBC. Each heme group contains one iron atom, that can bind one oxygen molecule through ion-induced dipole forces. The oxygen molecule is held within the hemeglobin by a paramagnetic effect. I find that very interesting.

To give you an idea of how universal are these substances and how limitless the potential of what they can create, here is an atomic formula: C3032 H4812 N780 Fe4 O872 S12

Do you know what this formula is? It is the most complex molecule known to man: the red blood cell. Put those many atoms of each substance—three thousand and thirty two atoms of carbon, four thousand eight hundred and twelve atoms of hydrogen, seven hundred and eighty atoms of nitrogen, four atoms of iron, eight hundred and seventy two atoms of oxygen, and twelve atoms of sulfur together in the right order and you have the most complex molecule we know of. It is something so tiny one needs a high powered microscope in order to see it. The speed with which the red blood cell carries out its complex functions is incredible. The complex data it carries is even more mindboggling. Its communication with the miniscule receptors in the bodily tissues is equivalent to writing the Gettysburg address on the point of a pin while passing that pin after being shot out of cannon.

Effects of magnetic fields on blood. Seems it will allow better oxygenation of the peripheral tissue.

The effect of magnetic field on metabolic action in the peripheral tissue was examined in 12 subjects by measuring skin temperature with a thermographic tracer and the binding ratio of oxygen to hemoglobin using an apparatus for detecting concentrations of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin. The skin temperature was found to increase by 0.4–1.2°C after a 5-min exposure to a magnetic field of 0.45 or 1.2 T. The binding ratio of oxygen showed a rapid decrease with application of magnetic field, which indicated the release of oxygen from hemoglobin.

Abstract
To study the biological function of hemoproteins, the electronic state of the central iron ion was determined by means of magnetic measurements. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, the field dependence of the magnetization (paramagnetic saturation) under a high magnetic field of a superconducting magnet and the torque of a single crystal were studied. The analysis of the data was made on the basis of the ligand field theory, and the electronic state of the central iron ion was determined. In the case of hemoglobin, binding of O2to the heme is studied by the Hietler-London calculation with the three ionic structures Fe2+-O2, Fe3+-O2-, Fe+-O2+. Hamiltonian matrix elements are evaluated by the method of "Atoms in a Molecule". It is shown from the calculation that one of the triplet-triplet binding states of heme-O2 becomes the lowest in energy at a distance of about 1.5 Å.

An excellent web site on iron, magnatism and RBC's. I thought this was interesting bit of history and modern technology. the connection between MRI technology and the magnetic theory of blood and Linus Pauling.
The binding of the oxygen molecule at the sixth coordination site of the iron ion substantially rearranges the electrons within the iron so that the ion becomes effectively smaller, allowing it to move into the plane of the porphyrin. This change in electronic structure is paralleled by changes in the magnetic properties of hemoglobin, which are the basis for functional magnetic resonance imaging. Indeed, the structural changes that take place on oxygen binding were anticipated by Linus Pauling, based on magnetic measurements in 1936, nearly 25 years before the three-dimensional structure of hemoglobin was elucidated.

I know its 2-D but the atomic configurations and the honeycomb, well its so ovbious. Structure on the atomic level will automaticly take the most effecient configuration. The changes in the atomic configuration of blood via oxygen, nitric oxide is very cool to watch on the wiki site. The structural and functional relationships are quite elegant when looking at 2,3-Bisphosphoglycerate, oxygen, nitric oxide.

Hemoglobin Transports Oxygen Efficiently by Binding Oxygen Cooperatively

Allostery is a property not limited to enzymes. The basic principles of allostery are also well illustrated by the oxygen-transport protein hemoglobin (Section 7.2). The binding of oxygen to hemoglobin isolated from red blood cells displays marked sigmoidal behavior (similar to that observed for the activity of ATCase, as a function of substrate concentration), which is indicative of cooperation between subunits (Figure 10.17). What is the physiological significance of the cooperative binding of oxygen by hemoglobin? Oxygen must be transported in the blood from the lungs, where the partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) is relatively high (approximately 100 torr), to the tissues, where the partial pressure of oxygen is much lower (typically 20 torr). Let us consider how the cooperative behavior represented by the sigmoidal curve leads to efficient oxygen transport. In the lungs, hemoglobin becomes nearly saturated with oxygen such that 98% of the oxygen-binding sites are occupied. When hemoglobin moves to the tissues, the saturation level drops to 32%. Thus, a total of 98 - 32 = 66% of the potential oxygen-binding sites contribute to oxygen transport.

Reexamination of the evidence for paramagnetism in oxy- and carbonmonoxyhemoglobins suggest they are fully diamagnetic. Diamagnetism is the weakes of the three forms of magnetism in a solid, diamagnetic, paramagnetic, or ferromagnetic and is exhibited by all atoms due to the electron current circuit.
Experiments have been carried out in an attempt to confirm previous reports of paramagnetism in the oxy- and carbonmonoxy derivatives of human and carp hemoglobin. When care is taken to ensure complete saturation of the hemoglobins with ligand and the diamagnetic contributions of all of the buffers are carefully evaluated, these hemoglobin derivatives are found to have the same gram susceptibilities as exhibited by a set of metal free proteins, suggesting that they are fully diamagnetic.
