LHC circus continued

Has science taken a wrong turn? If so, what corrections are needed? Chronicles of scientific misbehavior. The role of heretic-pioneers and forbidden questions in the sciences. Is peer review working? The perverse "consensus of leading scientists." Good public relations versus good science.

LHC circus continued

Here we go again...

Large Hadron Collider to prove 'God Particle theory within two years'

At least they're saying that the particle's existence could be proved within two years or it probably does not exist. I'd be surprised if they'd stop there, if not found...

The $6 billion LHC circus

Prove? Prove? Scientists do not say that they have "proved" some theory or hypothesis. Those would be the mathematicians, for whom proving something is a mathematically rigorous, logical exercise which, if agreed to as a proof, stands forever unless subsequently an error is found. It also might be the PR guys who write press releases using language that must make working scientists cringe and question whether those guys ever learned anything about science and how it operates. Or it might be the lay public, who want to believe that the latest press-released theory proves this or that so that the matter is settled once and for all and they can change the channel to something more entertaining.

No more "quotes" from scientists about proving something. Please.

I would assume the CERN accounting department would want PROOF that the $6B was spent wisely.

I think that PR is a bit like marketing; it has a distant and uneasy relationship with the truth. Bill Hicks said it all:
By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing... kill yourself.

... there's no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan's little helpers.

It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong.

- Richard P. Feynman

Normal science does not aim at novelties of fact or theory and, when successful, finds none.
- Thomas Kuhn
