Abu Dhabi-backed scientists create fake rainstorms in $11m project

According to the report, scientists used large ionisers, which resemble lampshades, to generate fields of negatively charged particles. That in turn creates cloud formation, leading to rain.

Over 122 days through the summer months, the emitters were switched on 74 times when atmospheric humidity reached the required level of 30 percent or more.

During that time, Al AIn experienced rainfall on 52 occasions on days when the country’s own weather service had predicted no clouds and no rain.

The scientists have been working secretly for United Arab Emirates president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

They have been using giant ionisers, shaped like stripped down lampshades on steel poles, to generate fields of negatively charged particles.

These promote cloud formation and researchers hoped they could then produce rain.

In a confidential company video, the founder of the Swiss company in charge of the project, Metro Systems International, boasted of success.

Helmut Fluhrer said: 'We have achieved a number of rainfalls.'

It is believed to be the first time the system has produced rain from clear skies, according to the Sunday Times.

* Very Interesting! I wonder how many acre-feet of rain they got on those 52 days of rain. And I wonder if that rain grew, or could have grown, enough crops to make a profit on the $11 million investment.
* It would be great if the Middle East could be watered again the way it used to be a few thousand years ago. Same applies to parts of Africa and all the other desert regions in tropical and temperate zones.

It's well-known that dust from Africa fertilizes the Amazon in wind currents across the Atlantic. IMO we have no clue what widespread, devastating effects could result from introducing new weather patterns to a historically dry environment.
