Oct 7 TPOD Error?

Hundreds of TPODs have been published since the summer of 2004. In particular, we invite discussion of present and recent TPODs, perhaps with additional links to earlier TPOD pages. Suggestions for future pages will be welcome. Effective TPOD drafts will be MORE than welcome and could be your opportunity to become a more active part of the Thunderbolts team.

Oct 7 TPOD Error?

Post by Lloyd » Thu Oct 07, 2010 6:13 am

* In today's TPOD, Wheeling Spokes - Oct 07, 2010 at http://thunderbolts.info/tpod/2010/arch ... spokes.htm is the following paragraph.
The rings are composed of large chunks of material, but they contain a high percentage of ultra-fine dust that is easily ionized. Dusty plasma tends to concentrate the discharges in the plane of the rings. The finely divided ring particles become oppositely charged and move out of and above the rings.
* I never heard of oppositely charged particles repelling each other before. What is meant here in reality? Please restate this in a way that makes sense, Steve or anyone.

Moderator: Tpod link corrected, when linking to a tpod one should copy and paste from the "Chronological Archive" as opposed to the "current" tpod. The "current" tpod will link to whichever tpod is the most recent and will change from day to day.

Hi Lloyd,

Im not sure but i think what is said is that the dust particles become oppositely charged not towards each other but towards the ring? But yeah some clarification of the process itself would be appreciated.

Regards,

The Great Dog interprets the sentence in light of the previous one. The ring particles are attracted to the ionospheric charge region, rather than to the ring. They are drawn out of the ring and "hover" above it because they gain a charge opposite to that which they carried while in the ring. In other words, they aren't attracted to other ring particles anymore.
