Velikovsky's Comet Venus

interesting post from gary, his books and website look at ancient egyptian culture from an EU perspective, especially its images and gods. combining what you can see with Velikovsky and the authors own ideas. Some you may disagree with but some you will find it hard to disagree even if you want to. It would be good if Dave Talbott could read gary's "The Comet Venus" book and give his view on it.

as we still dont have a mythology forum on thunderbolts to discuss stuff like this, there is an EU related "myths and legends" forum where garys book "The Comet Venus" is being reviewed. Each chapter is looked at and discussed from various EU points of view and the author is contributing and answering questions. There has been a couple of weeks pause in the book review due to work but the review will start again this coming week.

can a thunderbolts person answer if we are ever going to have the myths and legends board here? it just seems the craziest thing ever that the Symbols of an Alien Sky video has been released and we dont have a board on it!

I agree.

Afterall, Rens Van der Sluijs often posts mythological matters on the TPOD board but we have no dedicated means of responding to his comments.

Also, both Dave Talbott and Rens have said on a number of occasions that Velikovsky was wrong on certain issues.
I for one would like to know more about these apparent errors.

I have read Gary's book 'The Comet Venus' and such a work is IMO worthy of meaningful discussion, particularly from a mythological perspective.

Without the mythology, there would be little no EU model at all.

Hello JohnMT: I've been looking for problems [apparent errors] with Velikovsky for 40 years. So far he seems to be holding up just fine. Most of the people with the biggest grudge against his work haven't read it. Harlow Shapley started this tradition 60 years ago. Others who read Worlds in Collision with a jaundiced eye will be in the same camp as the non readers. An open mind is required.

Ralph Juergens, CJ Ranson, and Wal Thornhill seem like quite bright people to me. Their work is the basis of EU. Without Velikovsky, we wouldn't have Juergens, Ransom, or Thornhill to learn from. These gentlemen don't seem like dupes. On the contrary, they were and are discriminating. Without this incredible quartet of people we would be studying black holes today, instead of EU.

The worst i can find on Velikovsky is that some of the events he blames on Venus actually transpired during the breakup of the Saturnian System. Some of this may be true. But it's not a deal breaker for me. The big picture remains the same. On the other hand, some of the events blamed on the Saturnian breakup happened during the Venus, Mars events, from what i see in the field. The caves and burnt surfaces used to produce petroglyphs didn't exist during the breakup of the Saturnian system. The canvas for the petroglyphs was produced by Venus, in the shape of dunes, and burnt by fire [plasma] produced by Venus or Mars according to eyewitness accounts. This would imply the plasma events depicted in petroglyphs were from the Venus or Mars events as described in Worlds in Collision. An axis mundi or polar column might transpire during a close encounter with a planet sized neighbor.

I was hoping the dune thread would be a chance to discuss this material, but the majority of comments are derisive of Velikovsky and his work. Some things never change.

I will continue to search out problems with Velikovsky, not blindly follow. The one point where i noticed a problem with V, was the description of broken forrests. He didn't think volcanoes could splinter a forrest. Mount Saint Helens taught us an exploding volcano can splinter a Forrest. We all learn new things over time. Unfortunately V didn't live to see Mount Saint Helens.

So John, if you'd like to talk mythology, please stop by the dune thread.
