--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Though not specifically aimed at the Electric Universe, here is a general resource guide for astronomical images/data, both of local planetary bodies, comets, moons, and for deep-space objects...

Basically, I want the public to have access to what we have access to. Lots of GREAT raw data out there. Too much for anyone person, site, agency to hoard or even to process it all.

Pardon my "thoroughness..."

Raw photos (some with captions; others not so much):

(Astronomical Picture of the Day)

(Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for Operations)

(HiRISE; High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment @ Mars)

(Lunar Photo of the Day)

(Malin Space Science Systems; home of MOC (Mars Orbiter Cam) images, among others. Low-to-mid resolution)

(Martian Spiders; includes articles, images, links to original images relating to the "Martian spiders" and surrounding regions.)

(NASA's Planetary Photojournal; includes large caches of raw and processed images from various missions to and observations of planets, moons and other bodies int he solar system.)

(NASA's Solar System Explorer; similar to the Planetary Photojournal, but with some additional data and other focuses.)

(National Space Science Data Center)

(Planetary Data System - Home)

(Planetary Data System, imaging node; provides access to a number of resources)

(TES; Mars Global Surveyor's Thermal Imaging Spectrometer)

(THEMIS; Mars satellite imaging, mid resolution)

(USGS - ARP; USGS - Astrogeology Research Program)

Specific missions:

(Cassini-Huygens; ESA site)

(CLUSTER; "The 4 Cluster spacecraft are providing a detailed three-dimensional map of the magnetosphere, with surprising results")

(FUSE; Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer)

(Mars Exploration Program)

(Mars Exploration Rover Mission)

(Mars Express; ESA site)

(Mars Global Surveyor)

(New Horizons; NASA/APL/JPL/JHU site?)

(RHESSI; Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager )

(SOHO; Solar and Heliospheric Observatory)

(STEREO; Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory)

(Ulysses; mission to the sun's south polar cap)

(Venus Express; ESA site)

(Yohkoh)

Deep-space telescopes/observatories:

(Hubble telescope sites)

(Spitzer telescope)

(Chandra x-ray observatory)

(Integral)

Mapping sites/software:

(Google Maps - Earth; including good quality satellite imagery.)

(Google Maps - Moon)

(Google Maps - Mars)

(Flash Earth; similar to google maps, allows comparison between different image sets like google, yahoo, altavista, microsoft live. {Requires the Flash plug-in?})

(Crater map.)

(NASA's World Wind project; 3D planetary visualization, mapping, imaging software. Very cool. Even includes recently released Java version; in addition to the regular .NET Windows-only version! I've used this the windows-only version extensively.)

(Google Earth; 3D mapping & visualization software by Google. I na similar vein to that of World Wind. Both have their +'s & -'s)

Miscellaneous:

(The Aladin Sky Atlas; "Aladin is an interactive software sky atlas allowing the user to visualize digitized astronomical images")

(High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center; NASA site)

(Lightning Image Sensor data; lightning strike/distribution data)

(Optical Transient Detector; lightning strike/distribution data)

(Geology Dictionary; defines a lot of geological terms, in case folks need to look up the abstruse language used to encode data mined around the earth and the solar system...)

----------

Addendum, perhaps a moderator can make this thread/topic "sticky" so it stays at the top in the forum. Good resources for those interested in raw data...

Likewise, folks with other good pictorial resources, or other science-related & "reliable" (raw-data?) resources may feel free to post and add resources. Perhaps I'll amend the list above as additional, suitable resources come in? Hope this is useful for all!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Updated "Specific Missions" section to include "New Horizons," submitted by a user in a different forum/thread. Hats off to them.

also made minor edit to use BBcode for links, to make sure all links work properly. HAve noticed that certain characters aren't interpreted as part of an address unless used in a specific way in a BBcode tag. All links should be working now, I think.

Updated "mapping" section with "crater maps" interactive map site, and updated "miscellaneous" with a link to a "Geological Dictionary." Hope these are useful to someone...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Added "Aladin Sky Atlas" software to 'Miscellaneous' section.

Apparently geared toward being as comprehensive a deep-sky atlas as possible for obtaining and viewing most/any/all images taken over a massive portion of the sky in various wavelengths. See their FAQ for more info.

Cheers,
~Michael

Added a bunch of specific missions, including STEREO, SOHO, ULYSSES, Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), etc.

Also added a couple image resources.

Here's a brief snippet of info on Martian Dust Devils as seen by rovers or MGS {?}. Too little info to necessarily be a full-blown resources. But interesting anyway. As a few videos show the dust devils flashing or interacting with the ground at the base. Pretty compelling stuff. How can this get ignored?

Anyone got other resources? Missions, raw data, etc? Post up!

Cheers,
~Michael

Addendum, found this page quite handy. Added a number of resources from it:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seems that after a technical glitch kept me off-site for a while, I can't edit my old posts from pre-glitch. Go figure.

Well, I guess I'll just add stuff to new posts as I find it.

(High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC); on board Mars Express satellite administered by ESA.)

(Smart-1 site; ESA-administered).

(XMM-NEWTON; space telecsope.)

(Deep Impact; NASA site.)

(MESSENGER; NASA site for probe to visit Mercury.)

I seem to have found a few new resources...

(EarthSLOT; Virtual Globes to help scientists, resource managers, educators, and the public better understand our planet and the earth science that goes on here)

(GeoFusion; 3D globes and some other resources, may not be "free.")

(Lunar Map Catalog; )

(Lunar and Planetary Institute; see their "Resources" menu for some good links)

(TerraExplorer; 3D globes, may not be "free.")

"Xenon on the Verge of an Electric Breakdown"
"In carefully designed lab experiments the region between a pair of electrodes fills with plasma smoothly, starting at the positive end, with a wave front that sweeps quickly across to the negative end."

"At the leading edge of this so-called ionization front is a narrow band of enhanced electric field, according to theory and indirect experiments, but theorists only vaguely understand what determines the field's profile."
