Rectangle or hexagon?

Unread post by Frantic » Wed Oct 01, 2014 7:30 pm

Very cool valleys found on the moon in the shape of a pentagon.

dohh... I wrote hexagon lol

I just find it interesting they term it a rectangle when its sides are clearly not close to parallel. I was about to upload another image and draw lines and extend them out to their intersections, but anyone with basic geometry knowledge can tell it is a pentagon, so I won't bother.

Out right denial of a shape, that is new ...

Yes, the headline--from the get go--is bulls1ht:

"Scientists have identified a huge rectangular feature on the Moon that is buried just below the surface."

This begs the question: If they went to the trouble to identify and find such features, why outright lie about what they are seeing? Why do you think the establishment uses language deceptively for being so allegedly in pursuit of "science" and "fact"?

That's a Question of the Projection Only...

Unread post by FS3 » Thu Oct 02, 2014 10:23 pm

...

Look here:

Image

Is it a bird? Is it Superm'n? Is it sqare? No, it's a rectangle...

If you are using the right kind of perspective.

The above BBC-Link shows a MERCATOR PROJECTION that uses a cylindrical method why the actual shape looks distorted. My link shows a somewhat STEREOGRAPHIC rendering (see the circular scale) which is more like the real view would be. That's why that shape is a rectangle.

See that distortions in the different projection types explained at:

Ok but the regions being compared looking nothing similar. The pentagon outline and rectangle are not the same structures.

Ok FS3. Thanks for pointing that out. But how about this perspective, I suppose the same?

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/7 ... llmoon.jpg

Notice the structure is really open ended and is distorted in your projection showing the ends closer to each-other.

The geometries and areas are distorted in both, I don't even know what I am looking at anymore. I go back to my original question i suppose :)

But I know where you stand.

How about calling it a polygon?
Let's keep in mind these are gravity variation maps.
Looking at this gravity map is that another polygon known as the Pacific ring of fire?

Ring of fire was my first thought. But I didn't want to most a random speculation because I have no way to make any connection there. But I too feel some connection or similarity there.

There are definitely issues with the map projections, and it is the thin valley channels that they have recently discovered not the larger areas. These can really only be seen on the surface gravity map. Which is the first image I posted and they have a 3d projection as well at the article. I agree with FS3, the first image is definitely skewed and the top portion of that pentagon does not really have those sharp angles. I see it more closely resembles a pentagon than a square, but that's probably just what I wanted to see. I guess we can compromise with polygon, and we are all happy :)

Lunar fulgamites?

Unread post by Metryq » Mon Oct 13, 2014 3:44 am

Evidence for Young Lunar Volcanism, NASA Science News:
The deposits are scattered across the moon’s dark volcanic plains and are characterized by a mixture of smooth, rounded, shallow mounds next to patches of rough, blocky terrain.
That sounds like EU fulgamites, like Olympus Mons. The young age of the formations does not automatically mean they are volcanic, and the press release does not say if any other data point to volcanism.
The new information is hard to reconcile with what currently is thought about the temperature of the interior of the moon.
Naturally, "scientists are baffled." That happens when one tries to force a square peg into a round hole.

If anything, the strange shapes in the Moon photo look like the fulgarites noted in this TPOD.

Wonderfiul example of EDM on The Moon

Unread post by neilwilkes » Mon Oct 13, 2014 4:33 am

With apologies for the Google Moon image. I tried to upload the KMZ file but it is not allowed.
To see this one properly (the default settings will not show the right map) you will need to go into the settings & make sure that the Lunar Orbiter Mosaic view is set (see screengrab).

The crater we are interested in is Hyginus Crater, and check this out for a great shot:

No idea what the anomalies to the top left are - suggestions?
