C/2010 X1 Elenin 8h magnitude and steady- in process of disintegrating. Will not survive perihelion.
Low western evening sky.

SO MUCH FOR DOOMSDAY: Comet Elenin (C/2010 X1), widely known for inaccurate reports of its threat to Earth, appears to be breaking apart. Observations by amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo of Castlemaine, Australia show a rapid dimming and elongation of the comet's nucleus akin to that of Comet LINEAR (C/1999 S4), which also disintegrated when it approached the sun in 2000. Comets are fragile objects, so this development while unexpected comes as no surprise. Readers with pertinent images of Elenin are invited to submit them here.

Just because a comet explodes or breaks up is not necessarily a good thing for planet Earth. The pieces that result could be highly charged. If the Earth were to pass through a cloud of charged fragments many Chicago Fire type events could result. Even one Tunguska type event could be a bummer over New York City.

If the comet has exploded i hope NASA will determine if the orbit of Earth will pass through the debris field. The odds of a problem are hopefully small.

I've read that a plugged in [grounded] microwave oven acts as a Faraday cage, when not turned on. Something to keep in mind.

I have been reading what everyone (on other websites) has to say as to why the break-up or disintegration is occurring. All points of view are coming from the dirty snowball theory. From the EU perspective, what could be causing this to happen? What are the implications? If this comet has been around for thousands of years, what would cause it die out now?

Could you speculate as to how much the break-up would affect the timeline? If we are poised to travel through the debris tail, is the timeline probably close to the original projections? Or could it be totally different now?

What all should be placed in the Faraday cage? More specifically, at the risk of exposing my total ignorance, would an EMP cause damage to batteries?

I would really appreciate you imparting your knowledge. Thanks!

I am still not convinced that the comet is going to be a major threat to global electronics, but I can answer the question about why it is breaking up.

According to Professor Scott (author of the Electric Sun), bodies fission to creat more surface area upon which to balance electrical stress. In the case of Comet Elenin, it is coming into the Solar neighborhood from 'way out there', and is finding a LOT of electrical stress in the presence of the much more positively charged inner system bodies. Hence, it is probably splitting, and re-splitting, over and over, to provide more surface area for charge equalization.

Not a scientist though, perhaps one of the others here could put it in better terms?

Hello mistie: You're lucky. There is a free 8 part series taken from "The Electric Universe" book.

http://www.thunderbolts.info/thunderblo ... rchive.htm

If Wal Thornhill is correct in his Electric Model of things, and You read the material a couple of times, you'll know more about comets than ANYONE who hasn't read it, IMHO. That would include the guy from Spaceweather that Dotini posted earlier.

Hello Mike H: You said,

[...]
I am still not convinced that the comet is going to be a major threat to global electronics, but I can answer the question about why it is breaking up.

me again,
I couldn't agree more. I do think there is a small chance there might be some local event. A smaller chance still of numerous small events. Somewhere down a sliding scale of probabilities would be a repeat of the Carrington event. These issues are always on the table. Having a comet with a 3,000,000 year period [if that's the case] in the neighborhood, and having the comet break-up [implying high charge differential] would increase the odds of a problem a tad.

So instead of "convinced", i'd say, might. Instead of "is going to be a major threat to global electronics", I'd use, could be.

Thanks Kiwi. It appears from the chart linked below that comet Elenin was over 400,000,000 miles from Jupiter when this event happened.

http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=C ... ;cad=0#orb

Elenin was past the orbit of Earth approaching the orbit of Venus.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_far_from_Earth_is_Jupiter

That was quite a zap. I'd like to know the time lag between the beginning of the zap, and the comet changing its motion.

the "zap" seen in the video is just a lens flare. Sorry to debunk this, but there wasn`t any electrical discharge between Jupiter and Elenin. See for yourself in this video:

However, the events taking place at the moment are still very interesting and deserve close attention.

A friend who is an astronomer saw the first zap video and thought what he saw was a lens flare. Then he saw the debunk video and agreed with it. He pointed out how great the CME's coming off the Sun are in the debunk video.

400,000,000 miles plus seemed a long way for a zap.

Is the zap video the reason comet Elenin is claimed to have divided, or exploded?

no, it`s basically spaceweather.com which got the information from http://members.westnet.com.au/mmatti/sc.htm

C/2010X1 Elenin: 8h magnitude and steady- in process of disintegrating. Will not survive perihelion.
Low western evening sky. However, I don`t think it`s completely confirmed.

Yes, any discussion of the so-called "planet X" belongs in the NAMI thread. Equating Elenin with that illusory idea is a complete misapprehension.

Lens flare point noted. Question is, if its a lens flare what caused Elenin to change course? Why does that video stop at the point where it appears to change course? A longer time lapse would show if it is indeed headed in a different direction.

Good point Plasmatic: Maybe the flare caused the change of appearance. Maybe it's a coincidence. The breakup and flare just happened at the same time [if there is a breakup]. We should know the answer shortly.
