Re: Comet Elenin on anyone's radar yet?
A new report on the length of the tail of Comet Elenin: >900,000km. Not bad, but by no means the longest ever observed.

Given the apparent long and eccentric orbit of Comet Elenin, it should go without saying that the electric comet hypothesis would consider an impressive cometary display to be most likely--with a real possibility that Elenin will be the first "Great Comet" of the 21st century. By no means am I speaking for Wal Thornhill on this, just expressing an obvious implication of the well publicized electric view.

We're a little McNaughty down here... having already snuck one in.... C/2006 P1with a real possibility that Elenin will be the first "Great Comet" of the 21st century.
Same 403 here.. cache has it tho... (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... met+Elenin)All I get on this link is 403 Forbidden Error.

Nice to finally hear from Dave...what do you think of the trajectory?
SpaceObs is switching servers, that's why it's down
If anybody is interested there is a facebook group which includes Leonid Elenin http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=gro ... 74610&ap=1
I would love to see this forum more active, but that doesn´t seem to be happening yet...so drop in over there

Well, if I’ve overlooked McNaught, the best recourse is probably rationalization. The title “Great Comet” arises substantially from subjective experience, and people's experiences may differ. If you had to be upside down to see it, does it really qualify?Jarvamundo wrote:We're a little McNaughty down here... having already snuck one in.... Or how about this? One of the foremost authorities in astronomy is Robert Burnham. His book, Great Comets, does not mention McNaught. And please don’t try to make a point of the fact that it was published in 2000.

Dave, people in the southern hemisphere might not appreciate you saying they are upside down, but they got to see the full McNaught show and we didn't ...even though seeing that little smudge by the statue of liberty was kinda cool.
Back to Elenin...under normal circumstances, it might not even qualify as a great comet, except there is nothing "normal" about its trajectory and timing. Earth has not been through a comet ion tail in modern history, and not had an extended transit through a dust tail (1910 Halley...barely)....we are not talking just great comet here, we are talking possible confirmation of myths, and the fundamentals of EU.
Lets talk about possibilities, not predictions.

I wonder about the chance of the comet exploding. All that ice so close to the Sun. Just kidding!
Other comets have exploded, so one as negatively charged as this might be a candidate for explosion. Then instead of one comet to worry about, we have many negatively charged pieces to deal with.
Still hoping for a big fizzle. michael

SB, you have obviously not done your EU homework or you would know it's not ice.
And why do you want to wreck the comet and spoil a once in millenia opportunity?
"worry about it"? Are you scared of it? Are you one of those comet alignment earthquake people? Or a deep impact conspiracist? Noooooo...a brown dwarfer?
Maybe you should disintegrate and dissipate your negative charge

I thought the ice comment was obviously said tongue in cheek. I said i was kidding was an exclamation point.
As i stated earlier, there is a chance of electrical disruption with comet encounters. L.A. and Orange County are not viable without electricity. I believe Tunguska and the Chicago Fire might have been comet fragments. I hope the odds of electrical problems are low. At the same time, i feel free to discuss the potential, mainly electrical, problems.
Wal's 8 part Thunderblog on comets is excellent.

Don´t worry, I was in NYC in 2003 for the blackout....amazing experience, brought out the best in everybody.
LA and OC's power consumption is at the environmental expense of a large swath of the country.
The biggest question is the effect of the plasma tail.
Cant wait for Wal´s input here.

Re: Comet Elenin on anyone's radar yet?
Hello again IbiZen: If You think i'm making this up, see below. Comets can cause CMEs, or discharge to planets, according to my EU reading.

The Carrington Event might have been problematic for vulnerable printed circuits not shielded by a Faraday Cage. Try to imagine no printed circuits.
The plasma tail, as You say, might also be a problem. Hopefully not!

Fact is.. ±5 days of the last two Comet Elenin alignments with Earth and the Sun respectively, there has been an earthquake over 8.8.IbiZen wrote:Are you one of those comet alignment earthquake people?
If you want to ignore patterns, be my guest. But most of us, privy to scientific method, wouldn't dare ignore or mock someone who cares to raise awareness to an interesting pattern, with correlating data. Now without knowing exactly the system charge capacities, potential differences, temperatures, electrical coupling conditions, distances, velocities, polarisations, etc, etc, it would be arrogant to just blindly assume fantasy.
