APOD's Picture Of the Day

Unread post by vadar » Mon Apr 14, 2008 8:46 pm

Apologies to MGmirkin for deviating even further from your original topic here; but what I was trying to illustrate above has now congealed into a positive suggestion: Would somebody with the appropriate authority consider beginning a new folder (not just a single thread) dedicated to the examination, discussion (and correction, where required) of some of APOD's suitable (past, present and future) Pictures Of the Day - something like "APODs - Details, Anomalies, Misinterpretations & Misunderstandings"?

I'm sure such a folder would be of permanent interest.

It all fell into place as I was studying the obviously electrically-induced details of APOD's Crab Nebula yesterday (below), and was amused to click one of their links (CAPS) and discover, like Neddy Seagoon, that APOD's 'officially-sanctioned' interpretation of reality is "all in the mind, folks!"

Explanation: This is the mess that is left when a star explodes. The Crab Nebula, the result of a supernova seen in 1054 AD, is filled with MYSTERIOUS filaments. The filaments are not only tremendously complex, but appear to have less mass than expelled in the original supernova and a higher speed than expected from a free explosion. The above image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, is presented in three colors chosen for scientific interest. The Crab Nebula spans about 10 light-years. In the nebula's very center lies a pulsar: a neutron star as massive as the Sun but with only the size of a small town. The Crab Pulsar rotates about 30 times each second.

Or simply: "APODs - an EU POV"?

NASA Astronomy Pictures of the Day (APODs) - Planetary

Unread post by Forum Moderator » Mon Apr 14, 2008 9:56 pm

This topic is for the discussion of NASA's APODs that are of a planetary nature, as per the suggestion of one of our members (vadar). Discussion of APODs of a broader scope (e.g. nebular, galactic) should go under the broader EU board in this thread here NASA Astronomy Pictures of the Day (APODs) - Extra-Planetary. While the suggestion was for a separate board/section for this subject, we'll start with a thread here under EU - Planetary Science (PS) and see how any interest or discussion develops. Existing posts above this one by vadar were moved from the TPODs - Thunderbolts Picture Of the Day board.

NASA Astronomy Pictures of the Day (APODs) - Extra-Planetary

This thread is for any interest in, or the discussion of, NASA's Astronomy Pictures of the Day (APODs) that are broader than planetary in scope (see this thread NASA Astronomy Pictures of the Day (APODs) - Planetary for a planetary APOD discussion thread). Thanks to forum member, vadar, for the idea (though not exactly what he had suggested).

My thanks to the Forum Moderator for moving these posts to this more appropriate thread, and I'd like to repeat my reasons for posting them in the first place:

The day-in, day-out propaganda and misinformation accompanying the latest APOD photos NEEDS to be countered, explained, and commented on - and there is no better place to do it than here.

In fact, exposing the flaws in the APOD 'conventional' interpretation is far more effective than expecting the average person to suddenly grasp the concept of the EU mechanism - after a lifetime's exposure to 'scientism'.

If the purpose is to 'inform' the public of entrenched errors popularised by the likes of APOD, then the TPOD site (including this forum) would be the logical place to begin.
