Missing 995,000 light years
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/apo ... search?m87
As they say, It doesn't take a rocket scientist.
Over 120,000 light-years in diameter (larger than our own Milky Way), elliptical galaxy M87 is the dominant galaxy at the center of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster
The result is a 5000 light-year long blowtorch where electrons are ejected outward at near light-speed, emitting eerily blue light during a magnetic spiral. M87 is a giant elliptical galaxy residing only 50 million light-years away in the Virgo Cluster of Galaxies.

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041211.html
If you look at the size of the 120,000 light year galaxy, and compare it to the jet, the jet must be at least 1,000,000 light years long IMHO.
Am i missing something. These folks have degrees. I drool a little.

Good question...its hard to imagine that perspective would account for that image so I fail to see how it would add up the way they say....your not drooling at all, but this kind of good question makes me salivate....

Re: Missing 995,000 light years
These photos showing the "blowtorch" jet are processed images; they are processed specifically to bring out the details of the jet. The bright area that the jet seems to extend from is the center of M87, not M87 itself. The full extent of M87 is not shown in these images.starbiter wrote:http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/apo ... search?m87

Historically, this jet has always been seen best in short-term exposures of M87, while the whole galaxy itself is better seen with long-term exposures. Here's a link to some images that better show the relative sizes of M87 and its jet:

I hope that answers your question.

Re: Missing 995,000 light years
Hola DD: Thanks for your help. Your images raise more questions. When viewing the long exposure, the jet would appear larger than the entire globular cluster. With a cluster size of 120,000 years, if the jet is 5,000 light-years as claimed, it would be invisible.
The caption here http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap000706.html identifies the objects surrounding the galaxy [not galaxy center] as globular clusters. Are we looking through M87 and seeing galaxies on the other side? They do refer to the jet as emanating from the galaxy center, but not that we're only viewing the center. A little amgiguous.
Is it possible the processing used in the Hubble shot shows more jet than the older images?
If the jet is larger than 5000 light-years than the Black Hole powering the jet might be required to gobble up even more stars than already required. http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archiv ... 20/image/a This is the best image and caption. With such a long focal length lens, this jet appears many times longer than the galaxy is wide.
Because of the drool, take my comments with a grain of salt.

Re: Missing 995,000 light years
Now that i've had a few hours to reflect, i guess your saying the Hubble photo is smaller than M87. The galaxy goes beyond the lower right side.

That's right, starbiter.starbiter wrote:Now that i've had a few hours to reflect, i guess your saying the Hubble photo is smaller than M87. The galaxy goes beyond the lower right side.
Sorry if I only added to your confusion. I don't always express things as clearly as I should. But you filled in the gaps I left.
Here's another link to the Hubble jet image; this link has a "fast facts" tab about the image:
http://heritage.stsci.edu/2000/20/index.html
According to the "fast facts", the Hubble image is 7500 lightyears wide; so M87-- which is about 120,000 lightyears wide -- extends in all directions around the jet and the "center" of M87, from which the jet extends, as shown in the image.
I hope I really helped this time.

2,ooo,ooo,ooo Sun, Black-Hole
Thanks DD: I'm up to speed with the dimensions. Score one for the rocket scientists, minus one for the droolers. If the captions supplied the dimensions of the image as you did i wouldn't have been so confused.
Now lets talk about the 2,000,000,000 times mass of the Sun, Black Hole. Could the 5,000 light-year jet have something to do with the attractive power at the center of M87? Or do we just ignore it? The jet must produce ElectroMagnetic properties which would have quite an effect on the Plasma Stars, i think.
Just trying to recover some dignity for droolers everywhere.
Thanks again, michael
