Reduced energy/discharge in shadow?

Post by MattEU » Fri Jul 17, 2009 4:16 am

I think I remember reading somewhere in the forum that one of the planets rings was found to discharge slightly more when in sunshine compared to when that part of the ring was in shadow. I have tried to search for this on the web but am struggling to find it. Does anyone have a link to it or remember it?

Has it been measured if the moons of planets change the amount of radiated/discharge energy in similar circumstances? Maybe Io for example as it has been studied.

This is a 'good' presentation about the sun/jupiter connection (altough it is not EU proof), You could also google 'Alfven engine':
http://www.spacewx.com/jupiter/docs/JupiterAurora.pdf

As for an answer to your question, i think you are mixing things up, discharge events like on io and a conventional explanation of how the rings form.

This paper is about how the rings form > http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/080 ... 2849v1.pdf
Link to news article about the paper > http://esciencenews.com/articles/2008/0 ... ped.shadow
It is about charging and discharging by dust particles when in the shadow.

As for an EU view, this is how the rings form, http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/docs/00 ... 07C408.pdf

Strangely enough, I think you've got it backward (well, not quite backward; the rings apparently charge and discharge in Jupiter's shadow)... Don't worry, Michael to the rescue with references!

Don't ask how or why I have an encyclopedic memory for obscure articles...

Thanks for the reminder. Should probably update the "Electricity and Magnetism from Micro to Macro & Beyond" thread (done)... Been meaning to add a few references. Had forgotten about that one...
