Out towards the ends of each spiral arm there is a circular void, the one on the left even has a nearby, interacting companion galaxy, NGC 1097A, shining through the middle. Halton Arp identified 4 jets intersecting at the core of NGC 1097, a.k.a. Arp 77.
I'm thinking those circular features are the cross sections of the Birkeland currents that form and power the galaxy.

NASA wrote:"The fate of this black hole and others like it is an active area of research," said George Helou, deputy director of NASA's Spitzer Science Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "Some theories hold that the black hole might quiet down and eventually enter a more dormant state like our Milky Way black hole."...
Black 'oles quieting down and going dormant, does that mean gravity is a variable after all?
What happened to the good old power suckers that nothing, even light could escape? ;)
