Biosphere Is Miles Deep

Beyond the boundaries of established science an avalanche of exotic ideas compete for our attention. Experts tell us that these ideas should not be permitted to take up the time of working scientists, and for the most part they are surely correct. But what about the gems in the rubble pile? By what ground-rules might we bring extraordinary new possibilities to light?

Biosphere Is Miles Deep

- I don't know how old this info is, but it's fairly new to me, like a month or so ago. Here's a good story link about it: http://space.newscientist.com/channel/s ... 721245.000. It mentions that bacteria live even in igneous rock miles below the surface. Some protozoa are said to live fairly deeply, but bacteria go very deep. It said they can live wherever the temperature is less than 100 degrees Celsius, but some were said to survive even at 113 degrees Celsius. Some of the microbes are able to bore tiny tunnels through solid rock and colonize it. Maybe there's better than a snowball's chance in hell that microbes may have survived in deep layers of the crust of Mars. Does it have crust? Maybe the icy moons provide a better chance.

Lloyd the article is from 1998 but it is timely that you found it now because news reports from NASA are coming in that Martian soil is alkaline garden variety good enough to grow "asparagus in" (says one NASA spokesperson). No signs of life but as you suggest who knows what lies in the dephs of Mars' biosphere.

According to Stephen Colbert, of the comedy show the Colbert Report, Molemen....(they were talking about ice on Mars)
meanwhile Neil deGrasse Tyson, corrects him and calls them Martians.
:?

then goes on to say how physics are "right', how they deliver the goods, and that the search for dark matter continues....
