Recovered: Cymatics

Beyond the boundaries of established science an avalanche of exotic ideas compete for our attention. Experts tell us that these ideas should not be permitted to take up the time of working scientists, and for the most part they are surely correct. But what about the gems in the rubble pile? By what ground-rules might we bring extraordinary new possibilities to light?

Somewhere amongst these many pages I've made note of transduction, what I feel is the link between EM and sound (or vibration and oscillation, these actually being terms which also encompass EM manifestation). I recently ran across a couple of articles which directly address transduction between EM and mechanical vibration in terms of magnetite found in brain tissue.
Magnetic Minds article from 1993 wrote:THE ABILITY of homing pigeons to fly home and of honeybees to make beelines for the hive probably has something to do with their ability to synthesize crystals of magnetite, a strongly magnetic mineral. The crystals seem to act as internal compasses to help these creatures, along with such others as bacteria and whales, navigate from place to place. Until this spring, though, no one knew that humans also make internal magnets in their brains. The discovery probably won't make road maps obsolete, but it may provide a long-sought link between electromagnetic fields and disease.... <snip>

"Magnetite is the first permanent magnet to be discovered in human tissue, and it has new and novel physical properties."

Kirschvink found the magnetic crystals using a fairly simple technique. In a magnetically shielded and dust-free "clean room," Kirschvink and his colleagues dissolved brain tissue in vials sealed by fingerlike glass caps that contained a strong magnet and extended down into the thick solution. Over the course of a week the magnetite crystals in the dissolved brain tissue slowly migrated through the solution to the glass wall surrounding the caps' magnets. When the researchers used a high-resolution transmission electron microscope to examine the crystals that clung to the caps, they found that a thimbleful of brain tissue contains about 5 million magnetite crystals, most of which are about a millionth of an inch long. The crystals are strikingly similar to crystals some bacteria use to tell up from down.

The researchers sampled magnetite from different areas of the brain and learned that the crystals were consistent in size, shape, and distribution, suggesting that they have some biological function. But no one knows where the tiny magnets are located in intact cells. One possibility is that the crystals could be coupled to ion channels that regulate the flow of materials in and out of cells. When exposed to strong electric fields, the tiny magnets could reorient themselves and either open the channels or slam them shut. That would affect a cell's health or its rate of activity.

Biomagnetism and Bio-Electromagnetism: The Foundation of Life article wrote:by H. Coetzee, Ph.D.

[Originally published in Future History, Volume 8]

Throughout the past 30 years, scientists have been extensively researching organisms that have the ability to produce the ferromagnetic mineral magnetite. Magnetite is a black mineral form of iron oxide that crystallizes in the cubic or isometric system, namely all crystals which have their crystallographic axes of equal length at 90 degrees to each other. It is a mixed Iron (II) Iron (III) oxide, Fe3O4, and is one of the major ores of iron that is strongly magnetic. Some varieties, known as lodestone, are natural magnets; these were used as compasses in the ancient world.

The discovery of a biogenic material (that is, one formed by a biological organism) with ferromagnetic properties and found to be magnetite was the first breakthrough toward an understanding as to why some animals have the ability to detect the earth's magnetic field. Searches for biogenic magnetite in human tissues had not been conclusive until the beginning of the 1990's when work with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction on human brain tissue extracts of the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and meninges (membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) identified magnetite-maghemite crystals.

Caption: Magnetite Crystals under Low Magnification

These magnetite crystals were found to be organized into linear, membrane-bound chains a few micrometers in length, with up to 80 crystals per chain. Furthermore individual crystals have their {111} aligned along the length of the chain axes (the "easy" direction of magnetization). The {111} crystal alignment has been interpreted as a biological mechanism for maximizing the magnetic moment per particle, as the {111} direction yields approximately 3% higher saturation magnetization than do other directions. This prismatic particle shape is also uncommon in geological magnetite crystals of this size, which are usually octahedra. The crystal morphology was found to be cubo-octahedral with the {111} faces of adjacent crystals lying perpendicular to the chain axis.

All the magnetite crystals that have been examined to date are single magnetic domains, which means that they are uniformly and stably magnetized and have the maximum magnetic moment per unit volume possible for magnetite. Elemental analysis, by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, electron diffraction patterns, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy lattice images, showed that many of the particles were structurally well-ordered and crystallographically single-domain magnetite. This means that the production of this biomineral must be under precise biological control.

Ferromagnetic crystals interact more than a million times more strongly with external magnetic fields than do diamagnetic or paramagnetic materials (deoxyhemoglobin, ferritin, and hemosiderin). With this finding researchers were posed with a fundamental question for biology , namely: What is the mechanism through which the weak geomagnetic fields are perceived by organisms that are able to precipitate crystals of a ferromagnetic mineral such as magnetite (Fe3O4)? Could these crystals use their motion in a variety of ways to transduce the geomagnetic field into signals that can be processed by the nervous system?

The presence of membrane-bound biomineral magnetite, which has been shown to have a biological origin, and the implication that some kind of mechanical coupling must take place between each compass magnetite particle and a mechanoreceptor, or at least a functionally equivalent mechanism allowing the position of the particle to be monitored by a sensory organelle in the body, is unique. Research has also found that the magnetite is produced by the cells of the organism when needed. Forms of advanced physical intelligence can directly tap into this information if they have a crystalline network within their brain cavity.

Scientists are now asking the fundamental question: What is magnetite doing in the human brain? In magnetite-containing bacteria, the answer is simple: Magnetite crystals turn the bacteria into swimming needles that orient with respect to the earth's magnetic fields. Magnetite has also been found in animals that navigate by compass direction, such as bees, birds, and fish, but scientists do not know why the magnetite is present in humans, only that it is there.

We have also seen in research done in the late 1980s that proteins, DNA, and transforming DNA function as piezoelectric crystal lattice structures in nature. The piezoelectric effect refers to that property of matter which may convert electromagnetic oscillations to mechanical vibrations and vice versa. Studies with exogenously administered electromagnetic fields have shown that both transcription (RNA synthesis) and translation (protein synthesis) can be induced by electromagnetic fields and furthermore that direct current in bone will produce osteochondrogenesis (bone formation) and bacteriostasis, as well as affect adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation, protein synthesis and membrane transport.

Caption: Single Magnetite Crystal in the Human Brain

In the human brain, pyramidal cells are present and arranged in layers in the cortex of the two cerebra. The pyramidal cells act as electro-crystal cells immersed in extra-cellular tissue fluids, and seem to operate in the fashion of a liquid crystal oscillator in response to different light commands, or light pulses which, in turn, change the orientation of every molecule and atom within the body. Biogravitational encoded switches present in the brain allow a type of liquid network to release ions that induce currents to the surrounding coiled dendrites. Electron impulses from a neuron, on reaching the dendrite coil of the abutted cell, generate a micro amperage magnetic field, causing the ultra thin crystal, or liquid crystal in the pyramidal cell to be activated --- in a very unusual way. On flexing, this ultra thin crystal becomes a piezoelectric oscillator, producing a circular polarized light pulse that travels throughout the body, or travels as a transverse photonic bundle of energy.

According to Einstein, matter is to be regarded itself as part, in fact the principle part, of the electromagnetic field, and electric energy is therefore the fundamental origin of our entire physical world. Consequently, in work published by The Academy For Future Science it has been cited that "under present biological conditions, evolutionary development in living bodies from earliest inception follows unicellular semiconductivity, as a living piezoelectric matrix, through stages which permit primitive basic tissues (glia, satellite and Schwann cells) to be supportive to the neurons in the human system where the primary source is electrical. This has been especially shown in bone growth response to mechanical stress and to fractures which have been demonstrated to have characteristics of control systems using electricity."

Ongoing research has shown that bone has electrical properties. The bone matrix is a biphasic (two-part) semiconductor, i.e. a crystalline solid with an electrical conductivity. The collagen component of bone matrix is an N-type semiconductor and the apatite component a P-type. When tested for piezoelectricity, collagen turns out to be a piezoelectric generator while apatite is not. These function as two semiconductors, one an N-type, the other a P-type forming a PN-junction, which sets up a potential barrier and acts as an efficient rectifier, i.e. a semiconductor diode.

Mechanical stress on the bone thus produces a piezoelectrical signal from the collagen. The signal is biphasic, switching polarity with each stress-and-release. The signal is rectified by the PN-junction between apatite and collagen. The strength of the signal tells the bone cells how strong the stress is, and its polarity tells them what direction it comes from. Osteogenic (bone forming) cells, which have been shown to have a negative potential, would be stimulated to grow more bone, while those in the positive area would stop production of matrix and be resorbed when needed. If bone growth and resorption are part of one process, the electrical signal acts as an analog code to transfer information about stress to the cells and trigger the right response. Hence, stress is converted into an electrical signal.

An interesting property of PN-junctions of semiconductor diodes may be observed when current is run though the diode in forward bias, i.e. when there is a good current flow across the barrier. Some of the energy is turned into light and emitted from the surface and are therefore known as light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Researchers found that bone was an LED that required an outside source of light before an electric current would make it release its own light, and the light it emitted was at an infrared frequency invisible to us, but consistent.

With the use of an applied current of a few microamperes regeneration of the spinal cord, optic nerve and bone has been demonstrated and naturally generated electric currents have been linked to changes in developing embryos and in regenerating limbs.

During the past decades a great increase has taken place in research on the effects of non -ionizing electromagnetic radiation on biological systems. Much has been revealed about the human organisms on all levels but the question still being asked by scientists is: What electromagnetic signal might tune to a magnetic resonant energy which would alter the metabolic genetic regulation to bring about growth and repair? It has been considered by this author that tRNA molecules may play a central roll to cause cells to alter their normal properties which will then receive the original genetic transmission, given through a 'spin point' to a cell. These transmissions at the spin points, as discussed through research at The Academy For Future Science, may provide regenerating instruction for the manufacture of enzymes and proteins which are the building blocks for the 'new tissue' or the 'new organ form' which is regenerated on the physical plane. Projecting energy into the spin point allows for the formation of a blastema (mass of primitive type cells) that gives rise to the regenerated tissue. Thus, through the spin point, cells become the tissue responsible for the generation and transmission of direct current signals used in regeneration processes.

Definitions:

Paramagnetism is a weak magnetic condition of substances that have a positive but small susceptibility to magnetism.

Diamagnetism is the phenomenon exhibited by substances that are repelled by both poles of a magnet and thus lie across the magnet's line of influence i.e. have a negative susceptibility to magnetism. All substances are diamagnetic.

Ferromagnetism is the phenomenon exhibited by substances such as iron that show increasing magnetization with applied magnetizing field and persists after the removal of the applied field.

Magnetic domain is one of the regions in a ferromagnetic solid in which all the atoms have their magnetic moments aligned in the same direction.

Crystal faces are represented by indices and when the indices are enclosed in braces, e.g. {111}, the indices refer to a complete group of faces.

Now, none of the above is new information or research. I guess it just caught my attention reference the transduction aspect and the more than obvious cymatics connection. It just seems so basic, so profound to me. I have to make more time to study junglelord's and StefanR's posted material and references to the fascial and tensegrity material, particularly with regard to the piezoelectric connection.

That pyramidal structure of the magnetite crystal in the human brain ... well, that's pretty damned remarkable to me. But don't worry, I haven't gone completely New Age'y or Hoagland'er yet. :o

These were just the first couple of articles resulting from a Google search on "magnetite in the brain." There were numerous hits which I hadn't had time to check, just picking these first two. When I get time, I'll revisit the search results.

Well thats some excellent revival of important information. Notice the tissues that have magnetite include the Meninges, which is the connective tissue cover of the brain and spinal cord. It is the fascia, the liquid crystal. I work with the Meninges all the time. I actually acess the cerebral spinal pulse and stretch the Meninges with that pulse. Its called Cranial Sacral Therapy. I do direct and indirect methods of cranial work.

The Meninges covers a huge area, the entire central nervous system.

As far as the geometry, the cubo-octahedral is the geometry of the Fuller Synergetic Matrix....

In his research with the tonoscope, Jenny noticed that when the vowels of the ancient languages of Hebrew and Sanskrit were pronounced, the sand took the shape of the written symbols for these vowels, while our modern languages, on the other hand, did not generate the same result. How is this possible? Did the ancient Hebrews and Indians know this? Is there something to the concept of "sacred language," which both of these are sometimes called? What qualities do these "sacred languages," among which Tibetan, Egyptian and Chinese are often numbered, possess? Do they have the power to influence and transform physical reality, to create things through their inherent power, or, to take a concrete example, through the recitation or singing of sacred texts, to heal a person who has gone "out of tune"?

An interesting phenomenon appeared when he took a vibrating plate covered with liquid and tilted it.The liquid did not yield to gravitational influence and run off the vibrating plate but stayed on and went on constructing new shapes as though nothing had happened. If, however, the oscillation was then turned off, the liquid began to run, but if he was really fast and got the vibrations going again, he could get the liquid back in place on the plate. According to Jenny, this was an example of an antigravitational effect created by vibrations.
In the beginning of Cymatics, Hans Jenny says the following: "In the living as well as non-living parts of nature, the trained eye encounters wide-spread evidence of periodic systems. These systems points to a continuous transformation from the one set condition to the opposite set." Jenny is saying that we see everywhere examples of vibrations, oscillations, pulses, wave motions, pendulum motions, rhythmic courses of events, serial sequences, and their effects and actions. Throughout the book Jenny emphasises his conception that these phenomena and processes not be taken merely as subjects for mental analysis and theorizing. Only by trying to "enter into" phenomena through empirical and systematic investigation can we create mental structures capably of casting light on ultimate reality. He asks that we not "mix ourselves in with the phenomenon"but rather pay attention to it and allow it to lead us to the inherent and essential. He means that even the purest philosophical theory is nevertheless incapable of grasping the true existence and reality of it in full measure. What Hans Jenny pointed out is the resemblance between the shapes and patterns we see around us in physical reality and the shapes and patterns he generated in his investgations.

Jenny was convinced that biological evolution was a result of vibrations, and that their nature determined the ultimate outcome. He speculated that every cell had its own frequency and that a number of cells with the same frequency created a new frequency which was in harmony with the original, which in its turn possibly formed an organ that also created a new frequency in harmony with the two preceding ones. Jenny was saying that the key to understanding how we can heal the body with the help of tones lies in our understanding of how different frequencies influence genes, cells and various structures in the body. He also suggested that through the study of the human ear and larynx we would be able to come to a deeper understanding of the ultimate cause of vibrations.

Trinity

In the closing chapter of the book Cymatics, Jenny sums up these phenomena in a three-part unity. The fundamental and generative power is in the vibration which, with its periodicity, sustains phenomena with its two poles. At one pole we have form, the figurative pattern. At the other is motion, the dynamic process. These three fields - vibration and periodicity as the ground field, and form and motion as the two poles - constitute an indivisible whole, Jenny says, even though one can dominate sometimes. Does this trinity have something within science that corresponds?

Yes, according to John Beaulieu, American polarity and music therapist. In his book Music and Sound in the Healing Arts, he draws a comparison between his own three-part structure, which in many respects resembles Jenny´s, and the conclusions researchers working with subatomic particles have reached. "There is a similarity between cymatic pictures and quantum particles. In both cases that which appeares to be a solid form is also a wave. They are both created and simultaneously organized by the principle of pulse (Read: principle of vibration). This is the great mystery with sound: there is no solidity! A form that appears solid is actually created by a underlying vibration." In an attempt to explain the unity in this dualism between wave and form, physics developed the quantum field theory, in which the quantum field, or in our terminology, the vibration, is understood as the one true reality, and the particle or form, and the wave or motion, are only two polar manifestations of the one reality, vibration, says Beaulieu.
[personal opinion on]In terms of the one true reality of physical manifestation, yes. There is a one true non-physical reality "beyond" that of the physical, and that is of the interval, or stillness. Analogous to how the "10,000 things" of the tao are all different identities, in the spatial or rhythmic intervals between (which nearly always goes unnoticed in our day-to-day activities and motions) lies our common unity where the ... silent or still voice of truth ... is heard and experienced the same for all organic and inorganic things, including "ourselves." When the endlessly seeking, inquisitive, searching monkey mind is stilled this common essence-of-being (or non-being, if one prefers) can be recognized and ... "heard." Judging from how noisy our physical and mental environments are, apparently not many hear or are familiar with it.[/personal opinion off]

Reminded me of this, by Wendell Berry:
I go among trees and sit still.

All my stirring becomes
quiet around me like circles
on water. My tasks lie in
their places where I left
them asleep like cattle.

Then what is afraid of me
comes and lives a while in
my sight. What it fears in
me leaves me and the fear of
me leaves it. It sings and I

Then what I am afraid of
comes. I live for a while in

leaves it and the fear of it

Um-hmm. I find that what distinguishes the word - whether by symbolic language spoken or thought, whether by song of voice or presence of being - is not so much the actual sound itself but how it is punctuated by the rhythms of silent interval. I think we all may experience sights and sounds differently, all the senses, separately and uniquely according to our own personified identities as conscious organic beings, but that we probably each experience the intervals of space amongst objects and intervals of silence amongst sounds in precisely the same ineffable way (pun on tao intentional 8-) ). I find the many erudite and complex discussions and debate about the æther quite amusing (that is, when it's not annoying the hell out of my monkey mind  ), considering that it may well be that we ARE the very essence of the æther (or continuous, fundamental constituency if you must :P ) itself. Like this, for me as eloquently expressed by Wendell Berry:
The Peace of Wild Things.

When despair for the world
grows in me and I wake in
the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and
my children's lives may be I
go and lie down where the
wood drake rests in his
beauty on the water, and the
great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of
wild things who do not tax
their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the
presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind
stars waiting with
their light. For the time I
rest in the grace of the
world, and am free.

Do they have the power to influence and transform physical reality, to create things through their inherent power, or, to take a concrete example, through the recitation or singing of sacred texts, to heal a person who has gone "out of tune"?
....
To parafrase from the introduction of Fabre d'Olivet's-The secret lore of Music- , :
Music is in principle a reflexion of the laws of the universe, but it must be a true reflection if it is to work. In practicle terms, this means that it must be true to its numerical principles, those fundamental numbers that govern the tuning of scales and chords. Ever since Antiquity, says d'Olivet, these numbers have been forgotten or deliberately rejected in favor of some other, artificial system. Consequently we never hear music today that is properly in tune. As he puts it, all we have today is a diatonic system in wich only three of the seven notes are in tune, a chromatic system in which every single note is out of tune; and no enharmonic system at all. The Greeks had all three systems, each perfectly tuned with their cosmic principles. No wonder their music had a different effect than ours.
And a little later in the book:
...music is not merely , as is imagined today, the art of combining tones or the talent for reproducing them in the way most pleasantto the ear; that is only its practical side from which result the ephemeral forms, more or less brilliant according to the time and place, the taste and whim of peoples, which make them vary in a thousand different ways. Music regarded in its speculative aspect is, as the Ancients defined it, the knowledge of the order of all things, the science of the harmonic relationships of the Universe, it rests on immovable principles which nothing can alter.
...It is the same system that Timeaus of Locris regarded as instituted by the gods for the perfection of the soul, and in which he saw this celestial music that, directed by philosophy, can easily habituate, persuade, and force the sensual part of the soul to obey the intellectual part, sweeten its irascible part, control its concupiscent part, and prevent the two from moving contrary to reason or from remaining obdurate when reason commands them.
...It is never by its external forms that music exercises its true power; it is not even by the elements which serve to develop these forms; it is by means of the principles that constitute them. Whenever one imagines that the Ancients caused the marvels which they attributed to music by means of some special melodyor harmony, an abstraction made from something else entirely, one is in error. This melody and this harmony were but the physical envelope of a known intelectual principle whose presence awoke in the soul an analogues thought, and by its means produced not only the sensual pleasure dependent on the form but the moral affect dependent on the principle. This moral affect could never fail in its efficacy because the thought that gave it birth connected, through education, to the musical principle, and pleasure itself always followed because the form given by a man of genius recalled the principle and inhered inseperably therein.
Music can be envisaged in several ways: by the Moderns it is known merely as theory and practice; by the Ancients it was considered as speculative, intellectual or celestial. Practical music belongs to the composer or the performer, and does not exceed the limits of the art. ....
Intellectual and celestial music, finally, was the application of the principles given by speculative music, no longer to the theory or practise of the art pure and simple but to that sublime part of the science which had as its object the contemplation of Nature and the knowledge of the immutable laws of the Universe. Reaching then its highest degree of perfection, it formed a sort of analogical bond between the sensible and the intelligible, and thus afforded a simple means of communication between the two worlds. It was an intellectual language which was applied to metaphysical abstractions and from them made known the harmonic laws, just as algebra, the scientific part of mathematics, is applied by us to physical acstractions and serves to calculate relationships.

This, I know, is by no means easy to understand in our present state of enlightenment, but we will return to it.
The illusion from which we are seeking to extricate ourselves is not that constituted by the realm of space and time, but that which comes from failing to know that realm from the standpoint of a higher vision. -L.H.

Nice post and great and pertinent information.
Here is another one.
Our solar system also makes a "register shift." It has long been noted that the inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) all share such common features as relatively small size, solid silico-metallic surface, few moons, and no rings. The outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) share a second, contrasting set of characteristics: large size, gaseous composition, many moons, and rings. The dividing-point between these two sharply contrasting "registers" is the asteroid belt, a ring-like system of tens of thousands of fragmentary bodies believed to have arisen from an exploded planet.

It is easy to verify that the solar-system register shift falls exactly in the same, geometric-mean position, as the shift of the soprano voice in the proper C=256 tuning. If we begin at the outer layer of the sun, and construct a self-similar (logarithmic) spiral making exactly one rotation in passing from that layer to the orbit of the innermost planet, Mercury, then the continuation of that spiral will make exactly one full cycle in passing from Mercury to the region defined by the overlapping orbits of Neptune and Pluto (see Figure 11). The halfway or geometric-mean point comes exactly at the outer boundary of the asteroid belt. More precisely, if we compare the planetary spiral with our simple spiral derivation of the equal-tempered system, letting the interval from Mercury to Neptune-Pluto correspond to the octave C—C, then the planetary orbits correspond exactly in angular displacements to the principal steps of the scale. The asteroid belt occupies exactly the angular position corresponding to the interval between F and F-sharp; this region is where the soprano makes the register-shift, in C=256 tuning. Thus, complete coherence obtains, with this tuning, between the human voice, the solar system, the musical system, and the synthetic geometry of conical spiral action.2

Figure 12 illustrates what happens if the tuning is arbitrarily raised, from C=256 (corresponding to A between 427Hz and 432Hz) to, for example, A=449. The soprano register shifts (at approximately 350Hz and 700Hz) lie, in the higher tuning, between E and F, rather than between F and F-sharp. This divides the octave in the wrong place, destroys the geometry of the musical system, destroys the agreement between music and the laws of the universe, and finally destroys the human voice itself.

If we arbitrarily changed the "tuning" of the solar system in a similar way, it would explode and disintegrate! God does not make mistakes: Our solar system functions very well with its proper tuning, which is uniquely coherent with C=256. This, therefore, is the only scientific tuning.
If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have a key to the universe.
