Hi bdw000,
Fair comments but Italy isn't cattle country - beef's not a major part of the diet.
Celts weren't originally from France if that's what you meant by the French being taller than Italians.
Zulus and Masai are / were beef eaters.
I'm not saying that meat or beef is the answer to everything or making any statements about gravity. I was just throwing in Occam's razor.
Height Vs. Gravity Vs. Electromagnetism?

If I have the least bit of knowledge
I will follow the great Way alone
and fear nothing but being sidetracked.
The great Way is simple
but people delight in complexity.

True: but who cares: they were from somewhere on EARTH. If gravity (or something about the sun) is "making us small," it seems unlikely that the Celts would be so tall, since they are getting the same dose of gravity.Grey Cloud wrote:Hi bdw000,

I jjust used the France/Italy line because it sounded neat.
Also, I mentioned MEAT (not "beef") when talking about the Roman soldiers, many of whom lived way outside of Italy. Not that it's important.

I have no doubt that people born and raised on the moon would grow much taller, how tall I have no idea. Any humans who go to the moon and have children, they should expect to have tall frail kids.
Humans lose as much as 6 inches, even more, of their height as the age. All though this may not be related, but we seem to have lived on earth that had less gravity in the past. As evidenced by giants. It would seem that earth was spinning faster in the past, or did it somehow gain mass?

Influx:
This is a sincere question (I am not trying to sound sarcastic):
If gravity determines, size, why are mice so small and elephants so large, when both live in the same gravity????
I understand your reasoning. It just seems to me that the size of animals must be determined by something else, otherwise, all creatures on this planet would be the same size.
Again, this is a sincere question. Obviously (to me), genetics can override gravity as far as the size of animals goes.

Re: Height Vs. Gravity Vs. Electromagnetism?
* Overpopulation seems to cause creatures to evolve smaller size. If people get crowded in an area, smaller offspring can survive better than large ones, since they need less food to survive. When Europeans migrated to America, they had much more space. Larger people survive better in fights against smaller people. Women have probably long favored taller husbands, since they want those that can better defend the family.
* Donald Patten reported an experiment on mice about ten years ago which suggested that higher concentrations of CO2 can cause mice to grow bigger. He theorized that there was more CO2 in ancient times, which allowed animals to grow bigger.
* I think Ted Holden said elephants keep growing till they die. That may have been the case with dinosaurs and large mammals too. When there's abundant food, species may be programed to produce more growth hormones. When there's little food, species are stressed, which may reduce growth hormone production.
* Low gravity may reduce stress, but it wouldn't help if there weren't enough food at the same time.
* I read that the defenders of the Alamo were rather tall, like 6-footers.
